Why do people unlock the cpu? What is the purpose of that?

The purpose of unlocking is to change the multiplier freely in the BIOS or via jumpers/dip switches on the mother board.
for example you have a 800MHz chip. u want to make it 850. u can't cotrol the multiplier so the only way to do it is via FSB or unlocking...
multiplier will give u higher MHz if ur chip can handle them, but FSB will give better performance at the same MHz

First off, I want to thank you for replying.
So what unlocking L1 bridges does is it unlocks new multiplier to get more MHz?
Exactly right! Check some of the guides on the front page!:)
