I would have to say IBM. I also like maxtor, but that will get me flamed.

Why them? and are they the best for speed, read or just overall?

Speed doesn't really change from different brands, its the reliability that changes. I've used western digitals and maxtors w/o any problems.
Choice #1: IBM
Choice #2: Quantm

I'll flame you! (in a "nice" way)
Everytime we discuss this we decide that no brand is as reliable was they should be.
I work for a company that supports 6000+ computers. I see harddrives fail almost daily. Maxtors are the vast majority of the failures. I can produce numbers that verify they are inferior quality. I really hate Maxtor drives! WD did really well for a while, but are not aging well. I have not worked with the newer IBM desktop drives, but the laptop IBM Travelstars are not very reliable (or fast).
Seagates have been the most reliable in our computers at work and mine at home. Fujitsu is another brand I have had good luck with.

Check out www.storagereview.com for all things drive related. They post excellent articles and give great reviews of HDD's

I sort of agree with you that Maxtor isn't great. I add WD isn't great either mine broke after 1 year and a month or so.

In the reviews that I have read, IBM tends to be slightly faster than the others. They are more expensive, however.
Also, I still like maxtor :) It probably has more to do with the fact that I have three dead Western D's that I am using as paperweights right now...Maxtor is good by comparison.
Is it true that Seegate HDD are very bad?

Some people really like Seagate. They used to be kinda strange, but they sure do have some cool looking drives right now. I think they are as good as most, better than WD to be sure.

i had an ibm 40gb fail, only after 2 months of use.. so it can be any brand, just gotta take care of it, and the second it sounds funny, back it up :)
i have had very good experiences with fujitsu drives,as well as ibm and quantum so in my list it goes:
1.)Fujitsu
2.)IBM
3.)Quantom

I have used Seagate, WD, Maxtor, Quantum , IBM.
Out of them I would have to make IBM first and Quantum second.

Where did this like of Quantum come from?? Quantum does not make hard drives anymore, they sold out to Maxtor. Both companies had about the same quality, very poor.
Seagate had a batch of bad high end SCSI drives a while ago, but their IDE drives are still better than average.

Well when I got these drives I don't think they had been bought up :)
But its a great drive (Fireball PLUS AS) :)
My top choices are IBM and Maxtor. I would be more concerned with the exact drive and not the manufacturer. All brands have a few drives that just don't cut it. For instance the IBM GXP 60 is slightly faster and more reliable than the older GXP 75 yet both come in 7200 rpm 40, 60 GB... flavors and cost is about the same.

My cheapo PSU has currently got 5V : 4.96 and 12V : 12.07.
Not bad if you ask me :D

I have had very little trouble with any Fujitsu products. They are one of my favorite brands. I did replace a hard drive in an older Fujitsu laptop once, but it was a Hitachi(which I found odd). None of the Fujitsu hard drives I have worked with have ever failed.

I'm in the same boat with you on this. I like Maxtor, but a lot of people don't.
My 2 top choices would be Maxtor and IBM.

ahem, the gxp60 is older than the gxp75 :p
but with the gxp75s its kind of a hit and miss if you get a good one or not that wont break down after a few months

I've had the best luck and the best performance with IBM.
specifically the 60gxp 40 g 7200 rpm. In raid 0 it gives about 1.5 % increase over the ibm 75 gxp 40 g 7200 rpm. This is of course with my system.
Now days I would have to say yes some drivers are better than others but for the most part everyone has a lemon percentage. Its just the luck of the draw and preference.

i would have to go with maxtor. i've used maxtor in all three of my systems, and each one has been flawless. reviews in pcworld also rate maxtor the best.

I've had a Fujitsu for years and this thing is like the Energizer bunny, Several virus's have tried to kill it, heat (before I was a member here) And the bugger has seen 2 Western Digitals and one Maxor come and go in its lifetime/ Its a shame its only a ata 33 model as it has served me well.
Now It sits as a backup in a box with all my mission critical software on it as thats the only drive I completly trust.
Using a WD and Maxor drive that were both RMA'ed and seem to be doing pretty good.
If the other drives weren't under warranties I would have definitly bought another Fujitsu, but who knows maybe they dont make them like they used to.
-And when your trying to download the entire INTERNET you need a HDD that wont fail as downloading the internet twice would take way to long

I have an old Quantum hd that is still kicking, well...only 3 years old, and 2 Maxtor drives. I have never had a problem with either.

Maxtor is the worst drive... I got a Maxtor drive, it always stop spining by itself, so I had to hit it softly to make it spin again at the time. IBM is the best, I have a 4GB IBM drive, after 6 years, it still works fine, I also have an iBM 30GB for 2 years, they never fail. Never use other brand, so not sure about others, but my friend said WD is one of the best...

Most manufactures make duds every now and then. I have had seagate and conner drives fail on me. My 171mb maxtor died earlyer this year. Had two more maxtors die in a freak acident, They were under heavy load when the power went out. I think the heads draged across the platers because I had instant bad sectors that kept multiplying, Maxtor replaced both no questions. One 540mb Ibm drive fail.
