I have a compatible router but was wondering which firmware update is better.
Tomato can be found at www.polarcloud.com
Anyone have experience with either of these two?
I use the older HypertWRT+Tofu on my WRT54G and haven't had the need to try any others. You can't really go wrong with any of them...they're all much better than the stock firmware.
Just take a look at what they offer and weigh it against what you want/need.
I can't give you feedback on other firmwares since I haven't tried them, but I'm running Tomato, and it's incredibly stable. The advanced QoS settings don't seem to work as well in practice as they do in theory, but otherwise, I have no complaints at all.
I previously used a Belkin router that needed a warm restart every time I'd close down uTorrent, but with my Buffalo router and Tomato, I never have to touch it. It just runs like it should. :)

I have used Tomato and DD-WRT. While DD-WRT worked wonders, when I switched to Tomato things got even better. Anything is better than stock firmware.

What got better? Speed, reliability, . . .?

Well I do alot of file transfers and use my XBMC to watch movies and videos from my wireless desktop. With DD-WRT It was ok. The video would stream but hiccups in the firmware (caused by torrents, opening and not closing ports) it slowed the transfer. I switched to Tomato and can watch even HD video with no problem. Im not gonna say it was all DD-WRT's fault. All I am saying is that my streaming problems got better with Tomato. I also do alot of PF's and DMZed Ip's with my router and Tomato just makes it easier and it is less confusing imho
