I'm going to school in the fall for film production, editing, directing etc... haha So I need a laptop that wont have much trouble doing simple on the go editing. I was thinking the Dell Inspiron 1720 with the below specs.

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7500 (4MB cache/2.2GHz/800Mhz FSB), English
Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Premium Edition, English
Jet Black Color with Matte Finish
High Resolution, glossy widescreen 17.0 inch display (1920 x 1200)
Integrated 2.0M Pixel Webcam
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 Dimm
320G (2x 160) 5400RPM SATA HDD
256MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ 8600M GT
8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability

Maybe a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD drive after. How do you think it would go?

1) have fun breaking your back :)

2) it won't fit on any desks you find. Hell i had trouble fitting my 15.4 on desks in my classes, so i went even smaller.

Well 17" isn't too bad. Alot of my film major friends ended up keeping their power mobile film editing laptops in their room and using the super computers at the computer lab. I recommend this as you will work on blazing fast pcs and not be distracted by using your own pc!

One thing I noticed is you might want to check that all your apps support vista.

One thing I know about schools are they don't take to new tech fast so they aren't switching to vista quickly.
