View Full Version : Running a 433Mhz Celeron w/o fan?

I have a Intel 433 Celeron and my fan just recently burned out. It just has a heat sink on there now, but if I don't put another fan on and just go with the heat sink, do you guys think I'll overheat the chip? I ran it for about 15 min today w/o anything, and it didn't seem to get too hot or anything, but I don't have any form of hardware monitoring either. That's just by touch. Let me know what you guys think. I have a P2-99 mobo. Thanx.
IT DEFINITELY NEEDS A FAN.
Even if it doesn't heat the temperatures right now must be hot, so the cpu performance may be really poor... Your chip will be burn if you don't but a new fan soon enough.

Alright, thanx.

No problemo just don't fry that chip! See if you can get a new fan on the heatsink by tomorrow sharp my advice is for you to not use your comp until then.

Will do. New one is on the way, but not exactly sure if it'll work. I became a derring-do last friday and accidentally blew a chip on the mobo. I think it might control the fan... not sure exactly. So, I might be screwed. Thanx a lot though. I'll get one on there A.S.A.P. might have to get a new board too though :)
Your looking for a 60mm fan to go on the heatsink..
And try to look for a good fan that pushes good amount of cfm 35+

Not for a 433... unless he's gonna run it 2x default. I'm running an Intel HSF on my 400@600. I would think even a gorb would be sufficient under "normal" overclocking.
Note to quantumburnz: If you get no juice out of your motherboard fan header, you can use an adapter to power it off one of the 4 pin Molex connectors. I burned out my fan header running a Delta38 off it (oops) and now run it straight off the PSU. I picked up a ****load of the adapters from
bgmicro (http://www.bgmicro.com).

It's always good be on top of the game and the differences between the large cfm fans 60mm aren't costy.

No you will not if you have even a slight air flow through the case. Majority of new business machines based on 800-1000 Celerons have passive cooling, and those CPUs generate more heat than a 433.
Now of course those have heatsinks designed for passive cooling, and thats not the same as an active cooling HS with a dead fan, but still; if you don't fold 24/7 or really overclock it, it will be just fine.

You're not screwed...you just may have lost your sensoring ability. A 3-4 pin adapter will plug your fan into the power supply harness...or jimmy-rig it ...it'll work fine :D

Actually no it will overheat Intel doesn't put heatsink and a fan on it for no reason whatsoever.
Those chip still run at low 40's or high 30's full load and without a heatsink they will burst to who knows most likely 60 Celius+

As long as you don't load the CPU too much, cut it back to stock speed you probably won't burn it out . It's still very important to get a fan on it as soon as you can. The older celerons and pII's can take quite a beating heat wise. If you need to just check mail and stuff, it should be ok, but don't leave your computer on too long.
Tsunami, we’ve heard your opinion 4 times in this thread already, and quoting somebody else saying their opinion is invalid without anything to back your statement up is just poor manners.
