My bud got his xeon 3210 B3 2.13ghz CPU today ($253 at DirectCanada). It's over clocked to 3 ghz @ 1.375 volts. It boots at 3.2 ghz but isn't prime stable at 1.45v. SpeedFan core is +15. Here's a pic.

Got some pictures of the hadware/guts? I'm curious as to what your friend is using for a cooling solution.

This kinda dispells the Xeons are better for OC myth.
Still B3, Q will be more interesting, nonetheless it is benchable and you can even take it home. ;)

thats a crappy heat sink, it hardly could take my opty 170 let alone a quad at 3ghz

I agree. The all Cu version does a good job w/ my P4 prescott since I have a Tornado on it, but a quad? I think you're doing pretty good to get 3GHz on that quad w/ that HS. I think that w/ a B3 Q6600 and the XP-90 you would get similar results.

Better cooling for sure.

well the xp90 might be said to be crappy when compared to the XP-120/U-120's. not that long ago it was one of the best.

your comment made me chuckel a bit since i looked it up. now you think the xp90 wont handle a quad compared to the opty 170 you had on one. now C2D's oc better then that opty. now lets leave ocing out of the picture shall we. Your Opty 170 according to AMD's Cpu Table has a TDP of 110watts. His Quad core per intel's site states 105watts TDP. while only a 5watt difference i wouldnt be suprised to see the underling xp90 do ok with cooling something so powerfull. Considering what intel bundles with that cpu the XP90 is big step up from stock.

Now if the guy was lucky enough to get a G0 stepping that TDP would drop to 95watts at stock speeds. The only reason why i would see to get a xp90 is cause they are on sale at alot of places and do really well compared to other coolers at 2x the price. the only ones i would consider to sit on top of the quad would be the xp120 and ect.

Definitely an "economy" build, prices in Cdn $.

965p-ds3 mobo $123
patriot pc6400 memory 2gig $95
Xeon 3210 2.13 ghz $253
xp-90 $32
2 x 90mm fans $12
ThermalTake Matrix case $78 (comes with a 120mm fan)
OCZ stealthxstream 600w PSU $69 (sucks air up off the mobo)
Seagate 320 gig SATA2 $83
DVD/RW sata drive $58

Total: $803 cdn.

Not bad for a quad doing 3 ghz.

105w @ 2.13 is 148w @ 3 ghz, so that little xp-90 is extracting a lot of heat and for an economy build its worth looking at. Definitely puts the stock HS to shame.

its the ds3.. update the bios. many times that is allowing quads to go higher.
