Btw I also posted this in the "Video & sound cards thread"... I was not really sure where this one goes..So if's it's in the wrong place I will delete it.
Ok guys here's the deal...as you see I really need a hardware update badly.... The thing is I save the money up and I see i just have to get this game and then the money is gone again then i have to start all over again... their's gotta be a way.... I don't want to put it in my saveings account because I don't feel like writeing out the withdraw slip...Plus I want to do this on my own...Anyway first to get it out of the way I was going to update my video card again... I just got a Ati Radeon 32Mb sdr about 6 months ago I would say....It's nice alot better then the savage4 I was useing... the question is should i stay with Ati or go with geforce? more games are useing Geforce's extra features.. I (myself) think the Ati is a damn good card for the price i payed (I forgot it).. I'm not really sure how much I want to spend on the card...but I do know I want it to have 64mb with Tv out... After the video card upgrade... I would then move to the case I might get that Black Antec case... Now after thats said and done.. The harder part for me is getting the mobo this has to be done online and my mom is touchy about this... i duuno why she let me order a few stuff 2 years ago off the net.... I'm not sure how I can have her order the stuff for her... anyway I wont think about the mobo and the cpu right now as I have a little ways to go with the Video card and the case alone..... But this brings me to this about me building my mom's computer...
She does not really know all about computers...she just does the Microsoft word stuff on it... I asked her tonight I said " Well starting next week I'm saveing all my money to get your computer built" And she said " Nevermind now I might just rent a computer" that must be the "wrose" way to use a computer is to rent one... But I think she will see it my way and still let me build her computer...

Unless you are a really disciplined person when it comes to money then leaving it under your mattress or piggy bank just isn't going to cut it. I too find it far too easy to spend money that I have around which is why I never carry cash.
Just fill out the deposit slip Ferrari and dump that money and earn your 1.7% interest. haha, I know that bank rates suck but at least it won't be around waiting to be spent on whatever idea of impulsive spending might come over you.
I could easily build a computer for $300.00 or less especially when you can recycle some things from your old computer. It shouldn't take that long to save that up even if you are working part time for minimum wage, especially with Christmas around the corner.

Well most of time I put the money in a metal box under my bed :p but thats when the problems start...say when I get bored I go looking for games that are good and I like the review I will most likey go and get it....But anyway..
What I was going to do is Get the Video card first....which might be a Pny Geforce3 TI200 64MB DDR..... I really don't overclock my video card so what make I pick really does not matter.. anyway after I do that by that time I could get the case. because once I have everything I'm going to take the mobo and all the stuff and move it into my mom's pc which will have my old case and i would get the new case with the new hardware.... It may take awhile but I will get their.......
If my guesses are right in 8 weeks I can get the Pny video card... btw i'm not that type of person to wait and hang around for a new model to come out. And as I said before the mobo and Cpu are comeing from the net....
Now I just gotta save some money!!

Say why dont you try the 10% and 50% rule?? If you work part time or less take up to 50% of what you make and stash it .doesn't matter where just get it out of sight . (out of sight out of mind) If you work a fourty hr week take 10% off the top. It's called paying yourself first. the money you save will pile up before too long. and you can get the things you want with out straining the rest of your finances I try to practice this on a regular basis. I admit it is hard to do ,but it can be done.I bought a log home kit that way and am now saving for the foundation.
it helps to have goals along the way..figuring out the best way to make more money so you can save more . So you can reach your goals faster. I will say though you must be paitient or you'll blow it. Then you'll be mad at yourself and you will have to start over.......:( .....(btdt) just my 2 cents............tr

heheh I work less then 40 hours a week.....it's more like 5 hours each sunday....which adds to around $35 but I think when summer comes I will try again to find a summer job...and still do my camera work on Sunday's but i'm going to put this money in my saveings account. Around January of 2002 I should have the money for the Geforce3 ti200..... then I'm not sure what to pick next..

heheh I guess u and me are in the same boat! heheh right now i only make around $30 each Sunday doing camera work.... but all I need is 8 weeks saved up and that will give me $240 so then I would be able to buy the Geforce3 ti200..but by that time the price would have droped more on the higher end Geforces so I might go higher...... But after I get the Geforce or Ati.....most games now support Geforce...And plus the Geforce has "real" hardware T&L but anyway. I have my saveings account book infront of me and I'm ready to put this weeks $30 but...I gotta get some x-mas cards and some x-mas post cards.... first so they may set me back like $10 or so......But I will get their!

Shadow is right though....the rules are here for a reason, stick to them!
I would stick with ATi, if you have the $ then for $220 you can get a 8500 which has Dual Monitor support and TV-outn its also the fastest card in the world.
NO other companys don't make games with Nvidia, play any 3D games on a g3 and a 8500 and the 8500 will be better.

Ferrari,
If saving your cash is the issue , I would suggest you stick with ATI. The new Radeon series of cards being basically the 7500 and 8500 are very good. You can buy a 7500 for $100-105 US, that is a damn good deal, sell your 32 SDR radeon for $30-40 and all the upgrade will cost is $70.
The card is very overclockable if you feel the need., and it will last you a good year no probs. It has TV out/dual monitor support/ and the best DVD playback as well as 2D Video quality available.
For $70 more I do not think the G3 Ti200 is worth it. If you are considering a G3 Ti 200 I would say buy an oem 8500 for $170 flash the bios and voila you have a regular 8500 that will last a good 2-3 yrs, or just buy a retail 8500.
The 8500 will support more of the games to come than a Ti200 or 7500, but if you are looking for price/performance right now the 7500 is it hands down. faster than an Ultra and offers newer technology. There are no real issues with drivers for the 7500 and even the 8500 is pretty much working as it should with the latest drivers that were released by ATI.
The drivers will only get better for both the 7500 and 8500. I love my 7500, the overclocking potential was huge with it from 290/230 to 342/281 big bang for my buck!!!
My 2 cents

Now as for this card....I don't know they say that the Ati can do Texture compession.... My old S3 savage4 had it and Ut looked Sweet! Now I was looking at some reviews and stuff on the Geforce line-up and it did say it supports texture compression.... Where for Ati I had to look really deep to find that it has "spotty" support...Runing the Ati with Texture compression on really made my system slow with it's frame rates.

Flat out the bottom line is this, ATI provides better 2D Video/image quality. The 3D is very very good as well.
8500 supports Hardware T & L as all ATI Radeon cards have done for a while. You are running a PII and you are using a PCI card, this will create a difference as well. There is no way that UT would look any better with your S3 Savage 4 over any of the ATI cards.
I have used a Geforce 256, Geforce pro by MSI (very briefly as it was my brothers card ) ATI Rage Fury Pro (damn it was a decent card) Radeon 64 DDR vivo and now the 7500. I never had any problems with Texture compression enabled on any of my ATI cards.
As I mentieoned earlier if you have limited cash get the 7500, it is very good you will be happy, the G3 Ti200 is not worth the $70 more imho, if you are gonna spend that I would get the 8500 oem or retail.
8500 is the best card at the moment by a slight margin but it will be the card for a while and it will only get better.
I will post a couple links on what they say about the 8500 now

I used that 2cd that came with UT for the extra textures.....When you walk up to a wall instead of turning into a mess it becomes detailed....My Ati as i know can't do it and runs the game at a steady 5fps.

Read the article about the 7500 I think it will impress you. I UT with my settings at default , with my system in my sig I am getting fps over 95 on average . With settings maxxed out getting over 80 roughly.
7500 is your better buy.......

Overclocked it is faster than an Ultra actually, flat out beats a Geforce pro. Card works better with AMD cpu as well.
Mine is at 340/520 now but can go higher and I have been at 342/562 which gave me some tearing, but I can get higher for sure with a bit better case airflow!!!
I have compared my overclocked 7500 to overclocked Ultras and I posted higher 3D MArk2K1 scores with similar systems
All I can say is for the cash you can not find better and I have done lots and lots of research and played with the other cards available through my old employer that was in pc business. Got to test variety of cars and overall I prefer ATI cards.

I downloaded powerstrip as thats what people said is best....But their is no way in hell i'm going to pay $29.99 for that.... Their got to be a free version that lets me overclock my video card..
*Edit* Btw my Ati Radeon 32Mb sdr runs stock at 164.25Mhz the best I can go is around 184Mhz any higher then that the screen is really disstored.

Correct me if i'm wrong but don't you have a 450P2?
If so then you can't really expect really mind-numbing frame-rates or even playable ones even with a top card as your CPU/Board/Memory will be holding you back.

the 8500 is faster than any Geforce3 other than the Ti500 and is significantly cheaper, with new driver releases it has the potential to crush the Ti500.....also with the popularity that the 8500 is starting to get, new game amkesr would be stupid not to support it....

If you can save the $$ get the OEM 8500 it is an awesome card, I will be getting one in Jan/Feb, sell my 7500 which I would have had for like 2 mths hehehe, modded out it should sell quick,
8500 is where it is at flat out, next best to me is a 7500 cause I will not pay for a Ti200 when it is just a few bucks more for an 8500

heres a review of both 7500 and 8500. Too bad they did not overclock the 7500 cause then you would see how much better it becomes pulling ahead of Geforce Ultra cards from the comparisons I have made and other tests I have read.

well, with the 8500 if for example with your PII you cant upgrade for some time, then its fine youll be able to play all games for at least two years.......with the 7500 itll last a long time as well...butr its not guarantedd.

I'm looking at some reviews for the 8500 now.
*edit* about the texture compression thing I was talking about earlyer.....This is the same thing my video card now says.....But this is comeing from the 8500
Texture Compositing
Texture Decompression
Now as for the Geforce it has Texture Compression... So is Ati's Texture Decompression the same as Nivida's Texture Compression?

Read what the conclusion says in the review!!!!
The 8500 now with the most recent drivers is the faster card, and yes ATI has its own version of Texture Compression.
those are the 2 benchmark progs I know of and currently 8500 is the tops
ferrarif50 do yourself a favour anbd get a 7500 or 8500, cause you will have money left over for other goodies like games and ram and a better mobo or bigger chip!!!

Another good article on the 8500 and 7500 very good things said about 8500's smoothvision
http://www.sharkeyextreme.com/hardware/videocards/article.php/932821
I also contacted Vince who wrote the article and asked why they did not do any overclocking of the 7500 as they did on the 8500.
He replied saying that recently the 7500's some, have been shipping retail with 3.6 -3.8 ns ddr ram. This may be the reason why mine overclocks so well. I had always though I had 4 ns ram but have never looked now I may have to remove a ramsink and check it out.
He may do another review of an overclocked 7500. He liked the card and thought it offers good value after seeing the specs on what mine can do.
Hope he does a review soon!!!!!
