Currently, have a C2D E6600, not OC'd...yet. This is with corsair XMS 2gig DDR2 800mhz memory on a gigabyte DS3 board.

Now, I have decided that sometime in the near future, I am going to run a SLI setup, which will require a new mobo.

With that in mind, I have some questions.

Should I just stick with my current RAM, and possibly add another 2gigs giving me a total of 4gigs? Planning for vista as well.

Being as this is a gaming rig, should I opt for something a little better? Might OC the ram (never have personally :) ).

Should I go with 1gig sticks or 2gig sticks?

If the choice is to get new memory, here are some I quickly pulled off newegg:

And, memory I am currently using:

I appreciate the feedback.

Crucial Ballistix, no doubt. But if you're going to be running Vista 64-bit I'd pick up another set of those Corsairs and run 4GB.

If you can find a way to sell the Corsair sticks you have (shouldn't be hard through classifieds here), I would suggest picking up two crucial kits if you really plan on overclocking. my only reservation with that is that certain motherboards really suffer a performance hit with 4x1GB of memory. AFAIK, if you're planning on 4GB of memory, it's a safer bet to go with 2x2GB if you don't mind the price premium

Thanks guys. I do appreciate it.

Since I want to run a SLI setup here, I would need to upgrade my mobo. Also, as far as Vista is concerned, not sure if 64bit is the way I will go with all the problems I am hearing about right now...most likely will be 32bit.

With that in mind, and keeping on eye on the future (what game will be the first game to "require" 4gigs  ), would it be best to stay at 2gigs, or go to 2x2gb kit?

Shouldn't have a problem selling my current memory if I need to.

Much appreciated for your input.

Cheers.

your memory situation does rely on your upgrade plans quite a bit. if you want to run 64bit vista soon, then that 2x2GB memory kit will have that easily covered. as far as gaming goes, it's safe to say that you wont "need" 4GB of ram for any games coming out this year. however, upgrade your memory as you see fit, and more importantly, whenever you think the money will best be spent. memory prices are damn cheap right now, and TBH I don't think they will be dropping much further, but if you have no intention of upgrading to 64bit vista anytime soon, any 2x1GB of memory should suffice for a while

Good point. Wish I had money to burn.

Might hold off on 64bit for now, until they get it squared away and games can take advantage of it.

For now, might just go with the crucial memory, at 2gigs, then maybe another 2gigs when I upgrade to Vista.

Thanks!
