Was wondering what would be faster.

4 of those in raid 0 or

2 of those in raid 0.

I'm thinking the raptors will still come out ahead faster, am I correct?

Raptors will be quicker, the 4 others would be faster.

so 2x raptors in raid 0 are faster then 4x 7200 rpm in raid 0?

You picked a bad time to buy 150 Raptors from Newegg, they were $169 for a while. I picked mine up for $150 retail, but I prefer the Raptors over the Seagates.

The raptors have better latencies, and in most cases better speed. But, with these new 750gb and 1tb drives, then end up not quite being worth it. A 1tb drive has a muuch better disk density than a little 74gb raptor. So, in one single read, a tb drive will be able to read a whole lot more than a silly little raptor can. Plus, these new ones are using perpendicular recording allowing even more throughput. So if you really want speed, go with a raptor, but if space matters to you then just go ahead and grab a 320, 500, 750, or 1tb drive.

Actually BestBuy had the best price at $159 for WD Raptor X drives without any rebates. I picked up two before the price went up to $199 again.

Yeah what gives? Why'd they go back up again? Before I could find out about it, they're already back up?

I love my raptor 150s... they're faster than the SAS 15k drives we use at work for professional workstations, they are faster than my old U320 15k SCSI drives as well... not necessarily streaming data, but damn, the feel is worth every penny. I would reccomend 2x150 raptors, using them as main and temp/paging drives... I've not noticed a huge increase in raid, although tempting, if you ever want to change your setup, it's just a royal mess.

It was only a 2 day online sale, but you could arrange for pickup at a local store.
