View Full Version : I'm beaten.
Hello everyone. It's been a long while since I've posted.. I've been in Germany going to high school, and now I'm back. I apologize if this is in the wrong section; it wasn't my intent for that to be the case.
My mothers computer is heavily infested with spyware.. It's been a pain cleaning that up; she refuses a regular old format. But, leaving the severe infestation behind (because I'll get there eventually).. I have another problem.
Every time I try to check my gmail I get the old, "Server Certificate Expired" box. If I just say alright, and try to log in, it comes up with "Required field cannot be left blank" under the username field, and "We cannot log you into your account at this time. Please try again later." under the password field. The only help they offer is to make sure my date and time are correct on my pc, which should get rid of the expired cert error.. It didn't. My WRT54G Linksys router is set to spoof a MAC address, so I figured perhaps the date and time were incorrect on that. They were. HURRAY, I thought. There were no options to fix it, so I simply updated the firmware; it's now correct. It didn't, however, correct my problem.
Anyone else have any clue as to what is going on?
Any responses are appreciated, I'm at my whits end!

Have you tried another browser to see if that fixes the problem by chance?

if you did a little backup work, would she really notice if you formatted :) ?

No she wouldn't, I've done it to my mom.... she feared losing things, so I first dumped everything onto another drive just for backup reasons, then I picked out everything I knew she'd want, plus more. Did a format, threw things back into their place, used a screen shot I took to replace icons, and all is good. If anything happens to not be there, tell her the antivirus must have moved it for deleted it, then go find it real quick. hah, they need us much more than they think...
Hahahaha, yeah I did end up doing a sneaky format after some clever backup work. However the gmail problem is still present.
I can't figure it out.. I have tried both IE and Firefox now. Thanks for the replies so far everyone, any other ideas?

not sure what you are talking about as I dont use G mail, but have you tried in IE going into the tools|internet options|advanced and deselect the box for " check for server certificat......" also couple other server checks in there
I meant the gmail problem as in the certificate problem; sorry for the confusion. I just tried unchecking the boxed for the certificates.. No good. Still has the same problem. I can't believe the only information I've been able to find is, "Make sure you're computer has the right date and time"
Still looking for the answer.. but I admit I'm getting tired. Thanks for all the help so far.

tools|internet options|content and look around at the certificates, delete, clear state
Nope, still nothing. It won't even work on a fresh install of XP! Because it won't work on the fresh install, I'm thinking it's the router. Anyone know of any settings that would need to be tweaked on a Linksys WRT54G in order to access gmail (I don't know, I'm shooting in the dark)? Interestingly enough, my sister can log into her Yahoo account just fine. I've also noticed that the search results have been hijacked on every computer; even the fresh install of XP. Nothing turns up on any scan; according to Avast (on two computers), Norton (on one), Spybot, CWShredder, and X-Cleaner there is nothing wrong.
I'm also following this (http://groups.google.com/group/Gmail-Problem-solving/browse_thread/thread/e4bdd791df475bc/0b43ac53f6e89df4?q=Required+Field+cannot+be+left+b lank&lnk=nl&) thread.. Apparently it's not just me.
But, lets keep brainstorming. I really appreciate all responses thus far!

Barret,
Have you tried to just bypass the router and just use the modem?
I just tried plugging the fresh install of XP into the net directly; it worked. What setting could possibly make gmail unusable on a Linksys WRT54G?

Well, does the computer have the correct date and time? Make sure the time zone is correct too. Many authentication systems use a time stamp as a part of the algorithm.

Just do a full reset on the router. With the power on hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then while still holding the reset button pull the plug and keep holding in the reset button. That will give you a default setting on the router. Then try the router. If it is still not working let me know. I had some problems with mine when i had it.

Make sure you have the username and password (if there is one) that gets you to the internets before resetting that router.
Well I'll be.. It seems to be working now. That reset has done the trick! Thanks!

doing a reset like that makes everything default. so it will go back to standard wrt54g username/pass
