I had huge issues with the supplied Telus 2Wire wireless gateway, the firmware would continually drop my IP and not issue me a new one, firewall was good for nothing, and no gigabit LAN. So, ordered Telus to supply me with the new Seimens Gigaset SE567, which looks to be doing OK so far. Problem is, it's another combined modem/router. I happen to want to use my new Linksys Wireless N Gigabit Gaming Router. It's firewall is way better, firmware is way easier and more extensive to use. But how in hell can I set it up to work? Tried connecting ports 1-4 (4 says 4/WAN) to both the Internet port and ports 1-4 of the gaming router. I can get the setup page of the router, but no internet. Tried disabling the NAT and creating a static route for internet, but that didnt work. Could someone give me some advice please?
Is this for DSL, Cable, T1 etc etc?
If you providor requires you to use their modem/router then most times you can set this modem/router to be a passthrough for all traffic. Basically it just disables all the routing and firewall options. This will let you setup your own firewall/router.
In the event you have a dynamic IP just setup your linksys to get an IP from your providor. As long as the modem/router they provide to you is setup for passthrough or could be called bridge then you should be ok.

This is for DSL. And I can't seem to find any option that lists "Bridge" or "passthrough."
Do you have a static or dynamic IP?
Does your computer get the IP?

Dynamic IP from ISP. Both gaming router and modem/router set for Dynamic
So you machine has a local IP and uses the dsl modem/router as its gateway?
The problem is you need to configure the dsl modem to allow internal machines to use dhcp to get an address. If you dont have those options in the dsl modem config then you may need to contact your providor and see if they can log into it. They may have different config options.
We had to do this with one of our remote users. She VPN's into the company with a hardware solution an I needed to contact Verizon to have them change the settings on their modem so it acted like a bridge. This let me use our own firewall with the static IP they assigned.

Well, seeing as this modem is supposed to be a router as well, can I not set the Linksys gaming router to access internet upstream via the modem/router? And if so, how should I be plugging it in, as modem/router port # to gaming router 'internet' port or port # as upstream?
The problem is that if your linksys cannot get an address it means the dsl modem is blocking it from doing so and its not passing the request. Your dsl modem is the one getting the address. You have to get it to not request th IP.

It seems the DSL is giving the linksys an IP, but the linksys is not accessing internet via the dsl router. Could I go about creating a static route, and how would I go about doing so?
Which interface on the linksys is getting the IP? Lan or Wan?
You could try a static route, I think its under advanced tab in the linksys but not totally sure.

Linksys only displays my laptop's IP in the client table, not the dsl. The dsl won't show the linksys as being connected. It's connected as: dsl port 1 to linksys port 1, linksys port 2 to my laptop.
Try connecting the dsl modem to the linksys port 4/wan port.

OK, done that, client table in dsl shows an unknown connected, at the same IP I entered into the gaming router as it's "router IP". Turned on Dynamic Routing in the advanced tab.
Thats a good sign. Now if the linksys cannot get an IP address on its own then the dsl modem is not allowing it. How to fix that other than putting it into pass or bridge mode I do not know.
You may need to contact your providor, as I had to do with Verizon.

When I open the routing table on the linksys, it shows an IP of 192.168.1.0 "LAN & Wireless." What does that mean?

So I set up:
Router IP to one in my dsl router's range
NAT disabled
Dynamic Routing to enabled
a Static Route
A destination IP to 192.168.1.0
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Gateway to the dsl router's Internet IP
Seems to be working :D
Thanks!
