Let's say I had a K6-266AFR, 2.2V Core / 3.3V I/O, A 9847DPM...let's just say that.
What if I wanted to try to overclock this chip? What would be the best Socket7 board/chipset to accomplish this objective with? Just supposing I had an AMD chip...and I wanted to give this to someone as a curs...err, gift :eh?: ...What could I hope to achieve from this chip?

The chip reads:

K6-266AFR
2.2V Core / 3.3V I/O
A 9847DPM

it is a 266...need to know what I can do with it as far as overclocking...

From my personal experience with K6's, they are very stubborn when it comes to overclocking! Yes, it can be done, but with minimal gain!

you can check in the cpu database but I don't know if many people had luck with those chips.

heh............where do ya find "that" Dino at .............if I remember that's a very early version of the K6 .....................and if ya can get anything out of it, other that a lot of heat and smoke:D ...........ya "might be able to get 1 more multi out of it ..........

I've got that chip, mine runs great and stable at 300Mhz with a reasonable size fan, 333-337 is flakey and I have tried LARGE fans on it to no effect. However 330 is stable with a 60mhz bus, but a 60 mhz bus..... ewwwww, 4x75 for 300 gets better overall performance.

Any 2.2V board with a bf2 multiplier jumper and 75Mhz will be all you need to overclock this. TX chipset or VIA VP3, MVP3 MVP4, SIS5598 etc, would do.

HX chipsets can be okay too for EDO RAM , depends on the board. VX chipsets are iffy, you can just get it going on some of them.

There's a socket hack you can do to enable multipliers over 3.5x (4x 4.5x.....5.5x) but only worth it if you board is rock solid.

With a peltier and a VIA MVP4 and PC-100 SDRAM you might see 350 - 375 out of it, but you're better off just forgetting the peltier and buying a K6-2 400 for around the same price these days as a pelt. And the 400s will run 450-500 on air with little effort.

this board (http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=5114VUKIT) will probably get you as much as you can get out of it. Just posting that 'coz I know it's available. There's better boards that are off the market now and hard to find. but that ones better than quite a few. Integrated graphics on that "aren't too terrible" But if you have say a spare Riva TNT lying around that you'd rather use, that would top them.

thank you all for the help...I have an old TXPro board laying around somewhere...:eh?: I was just wondering what I could milk that chip for, just for the hell of it. It isn't something I would want to put any money into  Thanks again!
