I've got vista on one drive, and xp on the other. However, when I installed them, they were both primary master. What should I edit the boot.ini to in order to be able to choose which one I want to use (not going to install a bootloader, just tell the cmos each time I want to boot one, haven't got a cmos boot menu)?

You'll need to use the Vista bootloader. I don't believe there is anyway to dualboot Vista using the XP bootloader. Grab a program like VistaBootPRO or EasyBCD to enable and modify the Vista bootloader to include the XP partition.
