OK, I'm having 2 problems with my new Asus A7V266-E motherboard.

1. There is an unknown device in Device manager that I can't seem to get installed. When I go to Properties of hte Unknown Device i get this:

Unknown Device
Device type: Other devices
Manufacturer: Unknown
Location: on VIA Tech PCI to ISA bridge

The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.

I've removed the device and tried to let windows redetect it but when it redetects it never finds any drivers, so it goes back to being Unknown.

2. The second problems is the floppy drive. I have one installed, and I can boot to it. When I get in to Windows I can't see it thought :( It doesn't show up under My Computer, I can't "a:" from a dos prompt, etc. It is as if the floppy drive isn't there. I have tried 2 floppies and they both act the same way.

I'm using WindowsXP Professional with an AthlonXP 1900 cpu, 512MB DDR, GeForce3 Ti200. Any help you guys could give would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Mal

Yep, have installed all of the latest VIA drivers. Still shows "Unknown Device" in device manager and there is no floppy showing up in windows.

Bump!

I still can't get this "Unknown Device" out of device manager (or find the right drivers for it) and my floppy drive isn't showing up in WinXP :(

Any help would be appreciated.

Try going to properties reinstall driver, put your Asus CD in there, and have it look in your D drive (CD-Rom) for a driver after you specify the location.

Try reinstalling XP, I have an A7V266-E also and didn't have any problems with the install. If you did the upgrade when you first installed XP try reformatting your hard drive and do a clean install.

I had that exact same problem after reformatting and reinstalling XP. to start things off:
First I upgraded from win 98 to XP, I did not have the VIA problems after everything was installed. I installed all the asus stuff from the cd in win 98. Everything was fine, but I could not run any games correctly, sandra wouldnt run, 3dmark wouldnt run. I got sick of all the problems so I reformatted my hdd, by writing zeros in it, and reinstalled XP from scratch. Well guess what... All of the sudden I got that VIA error you have, and it was ****ed me off everytime I rebooted it would come up, and try to find new drivers for it...fail always...made me mad. Plus I still couldnt play my fav games. So guess how I fixed it.....

I reformatted and went back to Win 98. Im buying Win2k pro tomorrow
I have an asus A7V266 not the E, but close enough
sorry to hear you have the same probs

It must be an XP conflict. I was going to say that your floppy cable was probably backwards, but after reading the rest of the posts, I would say that its an incompatability issue, and to try to fix it w/ an update from http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

I may have figured out the VIA hardware install thing.
If you tried to install the VIA drivers off of the asus cd, you could get that via error.
I think I messed up in an earlier post.
After updating from 98 to XP I didn't get that error, but bad things happened and I was forced to reformat the drive, anyway.
After doing a clean install of Win XP, I rebooted a few times after making some small changes everything worked great. Then I figured it would be a good idea to put the asus disk back in and install all of the goodies. Well after trying to install the VIA drivers XP crashed and rebooted itself. As soon as it was done booting it found new hardware. The same via bridge thing you had. I did everything to get rid of this, but to no avail. Finally I reformatted again, and installed XP but this time without the drivers on the asus disk. I just downloaded the drivers off of the net, and they worked.
I hope this helps.
