Hi all, I'm off to college in about a week and need help finding a notebook that meets their specifications and is also good for generally higher end gaming.

My problem being that I'm having no luck finding any decent laptop powered by an ATI video card.

My requirements as given by the school are:

1.83 GHz Intel Duo Processor or better, but it must be an Intel processor
ATI X1600 Graphics Card or better, but it must be ATI
Minimum 1 GB RAM
100 Gig Hard Drive
Wireless 802.11 g capability

Of course these are horrible specs, so something must be out there.....but I cant find it. My limit seems to be around $1600. For the money, I can build a 2.2ghz dual core, 4GB Ram, 160gb-7200rpm BEAST with a 512mb Video card, my problem being that they only offer Nvidia cards and my courses will need the ATI engine......

Can anyone please recommend a gaming-ish laptop with an ATI card, or am I just chasing something that doesn't exist?

Well, if you check out the Dell outlets (http://outlet.us.dell.com/ARBOnlineSales/topics/global.aspx/arb/online/en/InventorySearch?c=us&cs=22&l=en&lob=INSP&s=dfh) you can find some XPS 2010s with an ATI X1800 GPU for around $1900. Which isn't too bad considering brand new they cost close to $3500. I will try to take a look and see what other manufacturers have.

I keep forgetting Newegg is in the notebook game now. Here are some links to machines that at least meet your specs. No idea on the build quality and whatnot though.

Once you get over the $1600 mark there are a few more systems with the graphics card/processor combo that your school is requiring.

Thinkpad mobile workstations (T6xP series) use ATI graphics, but they dont use any directx 10 cards yet.
