Hello, I did some searching and came up with a couple questions..

I had 2 sata hdd in raid 0 and one of them died. I was going to buy 2 new sata hdd and set them up same as before. I will be left with the one old hdd that is still good, but I have only 2 sata plugs on the abit an7 mobo. I was thinking about one of these adapters,

I'm not sure if I should go with the little inline adapter...

or with a pci type card...

I've been wondering if the pci card would have problems with the onboard sata that is also tied in with the pci if i understand correctly.

Your raid won't work over PATA and SATA.

Get the controller and run your hardrives off that.

Just make sure that your sata controller isn;t the same make as the pci controller.

Get the controller. It's almost half the price, you don't have to run the drive over a flaky adapter that will look weird in your case, and you get an extra port to plug in an additional drive later on.

Hey thanks, I wanted to use 2 new harddrives for the raid 0, and have the one old drive as single drive just for extra storage.
So I guess its cool as long as the pci sata and the onboard sata dont share the same chip like JamesXP said.

my DFI's will do raid over pata and sata and combos of the 2... it depends on the board

So now that I'm looking alittle closer at that Rosewill pci card, I see that it has a Silicon Image Sil3512 chip, and my controller on the mobo is a Silicon Image Sil3112 chip.
Would there be problems that they are the same brand, or is it okay because they are not exactly the same.

I would *think* it would be ok. If you're worried about it there are some others for a few bucks more; saw one listed with a Via chipset.

okay thanks, I saw one review that said it worked ok and another that said they had problems. I'm guessing it depends on the setup and where your trying to boot from ect.
I am wondering now if it would be worth it to buy a SATA II raid capable card and try to run the 2 new drives off of it since they would be SATA II also. Otherwise I would need to limit them down to regular SATA with the onboard controller. I'm kinda thinking it wouldnt be worth it and I'll just wait to step up to SATA II with a new mobo when I do the next upgrade, which probably wouldnt be for a while unless unexpected happens.
