I am the proud new owner of an AMD 1900+ on Abit KR7A-Raid. It is not overclocked yet, and I am getting temps of 102F idle and aprox 122F when playing Q3. (I get up to 116F idle when my case fans are off.) I'm wondering is these temps are normal... I am also considering overclocking and want to know what temps to expect...

1.) What would be the expected NORMAL idle / maxed temps for a non-overclocked AMD XP 1900+?

2.) What would be the EXPECTED idle / maxed temps for an AMD XP 1900+ overclocked to say... 146 fsb 1.85v?

3.) What is the "danger" line temp for the AMD XP 1900+ ?

Thanks in advance!

Hey Soothsayer! For the sake of the forums, please use Celsius temps instead of Fahrenheit. We have members from all over the world and that scale is more widely used. Thanks :)

So..you're getting temps of about 40c idle and 50c load. Not uncommon for a AMD chip but most of us paranoid ocer's like to see those load temps lower and..idle also. Considering the fact that you have not overclocked the chip yet, these temps seem a little high.

What kind of HSF (heatsink/fan) are you using? That crucial piece of info can help answer a lot of your temp related questions. How many case fans? Big case? Little Case? You get the idea. The more room, the more airflow, the greater the HSF combo, the better your temps will be!

Soooo many factors come into play in a given setup. Climate, case size, cooling type, mobo, voltage, fsb, BIOS version, etc.

Your best bet might be to look over the CPU Database (http://overclockers.cssftware.com/cpudb/index.cfm) to see what people are achieving for a given setup. On that note: For anyone posting in the database, remember to include as much info in a tight space as possible. Like: Multiplier(if AMD :)), FSB, Volts, Ambient, Idle, Load, Mobo, etc.

I'm sure people will also reply with their current setups and temps and help you get an idea of what to expect.

On the CPU, I am using thermal paste (generic I think - it is borrowed) and the HSF is a GlobalWin SAK38 with the faster 7000rpm fan. (copper core, silver fins)

In my YY 0221 cube case, I am using one 92mm front intake fan, one 92mm top exhaust blowhole (mere mm from the HSF), one card slot fan, and two 80mm rear exhaust fans on the right hand "drives" side. [and two window mods and some neon] All fans are 12v ball berring. The drive bay covers have holes to allow inflow of air

I am idling at 100F to 104 F (to 40C)
Room temp is 71.4F (21.8C)
Case Temp is 77F to 80F (25C to 26.6C)
No matter how long I play Quake3, my temp never exceds 122F (50C)

Thanks.

If your not exceeding 50c after a long session of Q3, then I would not be overly concerned about those temps. The HSF your using is a nice unit and is certaintly handling the heat your core is dishing out.

Beyond switching to an all copper cooler or water cooling, your setup sounds pretty darn sweet to me. During the warmer months my 1.33 Athlon @ 1.5 runs about 48-50c load all day folding proteins and I've not had a problem yet.

Your temps aren't bad, but they leave room for improvement, especially if you want some headroom to overclock!

My rigs never idle-crunchin' Seti 24/7- but my load temps top out around 44c right now. In different configurations, etc., I have had load temps average up to 47c without trouble but when I get up around 49c/ 50c I start getting lockups.

Did you try lapping your hsf? I consistently get improvements on all of mine that way, although sometimes its only 1c. Usually its around 4c or 5c though.

What is the critical temp for an XP 1900+?
The danger zone? The point of no return? Smoke city?
The temp that if you reach or exceed it, you should say "oh cr*p" and yank the plug out of the wall and pray that you unplugged it in time?

Thanks.

I've noticed that my temps are coming down. Now I'm idling at 100F (37.7c) and Q3 only gets me up to 107F (41.6c).

My system is only 9 days old. I guess it is still burning in?

I have a yy-cube also, but I watercool. I do however have some suggestions to lower your case temps.

I know your stomach flutters when you cut into a brand new $200 dollar case but...

First, remove the hole stamped grilles on the factory fans. Your fans are only able to blow about 50-60% of their capacity because of these grilles.

Second, if this helps little, I'd turn the 2 80mm's to blowing inward, and add a second 90mm blowhole on that right side of the case. Your drives will love the cooler air, and the blowhole will remove the heat. You'd still have room for six harddrives. <mid-tower people drooling>

This case takes some special measures because of the two chambers inside. All the heat from harddrives, cd's, and psu is hanging out in the case, and can't move easily cause you're running slight negative pressure inside. (3 out, and only one in. Four out if ya count the psu)
