I have a switch right now that does the networking...but my server comp has to be on...can i solve this problem with a router?...you don't need a server comp to be on if you have a router right??...

Do i need a networking program to use a router?...cuz for my switch i'm using a networking program called sygate...and makes my comp the server comp...do i need something like this for a router?

Thx

If the server is off when you start up the other machine you should select cancel at the logon prompt which would allow you into the puter w/o any network access.

the other comp works when the server comp is not on...its just that it won't get internet access...

But i heard that if i use a router...it doesn't need a server computer...is this true??

What you want is a router with an 'Uplink' port. You plug your cable modem into that and you pcs connect to ports 1 + 2. Then either machine can connect independently.

Tru when you use a router the router acts as your server. The only software required will be what comes with it. Also, the router will have a built in firewall and you can use either computer to access the internet at anytime if you have broadband. Any of the main routers you will find will suit your needs. I have a linksys which I really like and has gotten good reviews or I have a friend who has a D-Link which works just fine.

If you get a linksys let me know and I would be happy to help you configure it since Ive come to know mine intimately while setting up a game server. good luck
