I'm not building a HTPC at the moment but I'm trying to learn bits so it will be easier when I do get to make one.
What type graphics card are needed for HTPC?
Are high spec gaming type cards over kill given that TV and films are all flat 2D images, I would have though as long as it can produce a high reolution it would be fine. Can the Mobo's onboard be used OK.

I wouldn't use mobo graphics. Most of us use HTPC for watching HD movies which can use up around 50% of a C2D CPU, so you will want a video card that will use hardware decoding to ease the stress on the CPU. I am loving my HD2600XT, though most say even this is overkill.

Basically any card that has HD hardware decoding capabilities is what you want.
