I have a raid controlled thats not supported by FreeNAS so instead of going through all the crap to get the drivers installed at which point it still wouldn't be fully functional i'm going to migrate to a different os. What would you guys suggest i use instead of FreeNAS? My server is decent and will be able to run everything including Vista well(which I obviously wouldn't use :bang head)

clark connect is decent...although its a little complex for what you need, but i think you would have fun playing with the features it has

Windows xp, i tried FreeNAS and OpenFiler and neither would work properly on my new computer. With XP i just made shared folders and (after disabling simple file sharing) created user accounts with Read and/or Write privileges.

You can try Openfiler, or just use a linux distro but you'll have to learn to use linux and more often than not it's a pain...

Just for the crack you could put VISTA server (aka server 2008) on it. Its a free download because its a beta.

Other wise for Linux I would chose Debian. Or you could get Solaris free also.
