I recently installed windowsxp and now my usb 56k modem will not work. When I try to install the winxp modem drivers that I downloaded from the manufaturer, the system locks up. When I unplug the usb cable from the modem the driver continues to install and windows sees the modem just fine- no errors in the device manager. When I go to query or to connect to the internet the system locks up again.

I tested the modem on my friends computer and the modem worked just fine. I don't know if it matters but we both have windowsxp and the same motherboard Via Apollo pro chipset. I also downloaded and installed the most recent BIOS, still no luck. I have a feeling it has something to do with the ports. By the way, modem is placed in com3.

Does anyone have any ideas?

check to see if winxp put something else on com3 or move the modem to another com port

make sure you told XP to connect thru Dialup and not LAN.
I've seen peple do that.

Maddman, there is nothing else on com3, but I tried com4 anyway to see what would happen. I got the same result- system lock-up.

Gresyth, the connection is set up for dail-up.
