Hello! Just got internet hooked up, have six computers in the house. All college students, so we do alot of gaming and downloading, with the occasional school work :). Anyways, when I do a speed test on speedtest.net I am getting a dl of 6600 kb and upload of 1200 kb. The speed seems to be really good, but when actually surfing the web or downloading we are not getting good speeds. Yahoo will take 9 seconds to open their main page. I am wondering if it is the router that is slowing us down. We have 4 computers wired into the router and the other two computers are not up yet. Any suggestions on a 6-8 port router? Or anything else to speed up the network.
Thank you in advance!

Simple way to test if the router is a problem: plug a problem computer directly into the modem.

Could we experience noticeable slow down due to long Ethernet cables. My cable is probably 40-50 ft. to my wall and then I have a 60-80 ft. cord from there. should I try to get a smaller cord? Would this make a noticeable differance in speed?

Ethernet cables can go up to 100 meters, or 300 feet. Plug directly into the router

I cannot plug directly into the router, the router is in the basement and I am on the second floor. I am wondering if I will see a noticeable differance in speed between a 65 ft cat5 vs. a 120 ft. cat5

The length would only make a difference in losing packets from other interference. Can you at least test using a laptop connected directly to the modem to see if the router is the problem?

We had a computer plugged directly into the modem for a few days and it ran really fast for awhile, but after twenty minutes or so it would slow down a ton. My friend plays World of Warcraft alot and when he first gets on his latency is around 87ms and after twenty minutes or so it is around 1500 ms. I have had the cable guy come out and he always moves stuff around, but nothing has seemed to work so far. Need some suggestions :)

well it looks like its the isp or the modem. Can you get another provider?
