View Full Version : I got my XP1600 @ XP2000 !! BUT ...
Hello guys .. I've got my XP1600 @ XP2000 (1.7 Ghz) I have a problem however !.
I can manage to boot into Windows and do everything I want without a single hick. The minute I start to play 'Return To Castle Wolfenstien' the game would hang in random areas. The BSOD doesn't come out but its just the graphics that got hanged ! :(
Anyone knows whats wrong with this ?. I had my Vcore set to 2.0V so that shouldnt be my problem nor my Crucial's but what the heck is causing those lockups ?

yeah I know what is wrong, your oc is pushing just a little too much, back it off a bit and you should be fine. Is the chip locked? Give us more info.
Yeah, you're running too hot. You need better cooling.

SOunds like a driver issue. I had random hangups with my Nvidia based card. WHat card are you using, and what drivers if it is a Nvidia based card. What is your chipset.
that is a pretty good overclock, now only if it were stable
Its a locked CPU. Im using Swiftech MC462-A and the max. temp of the CPU is only 39C. It wouldnt be the heat right ?.
My VGA card is the Elsa Gladiac 511 (MX400, 32mb SDRAM) with Detonator 21.83. Previously when I tried overclocking my AXIA to 1.52 Ghz, it was stable with Sandra but lock-ups happens all the time in 3D games. Is the problem with the VGA card ?
If I get an Elsa 516 Ti200, will things be better ?. Im pretty sure the CPU is stable at that speed because it would do Sandra burn-in without problems. CPU temps may go as low as 32C idle !

hehe
Great o/c but it ain't stable. There's nothing you can do I'm afraid except unlock that cpu. If your FSB>150, and it sounds like it is around 160+, you start pushing the limits on all your cards! Back that thang up !!!! and go unlock it !!!
Have you tried the Detonator 23.11?

That is definitly the video card, and no either video card will cause the lockups. It is a VIA and a Nvida problem.
If you have the Via chipset the download the patch that corrects the video lockups.
Also try the 23.11 which are more stable and faster, but definitly if you have the Via chipset get the Patch.
I think your CPU is stable. I had the exact same problems with lockups in 3D games.

Well
I Got a 1600 XP Also, Epox 8KHA, 384MB OF PC2100 Kingston DDR RAM, One 46.1 GB IBM DESKSTAR 7200 RPM - STABLE AS HELL OS, 20.0Gb Seagate 5400 rpm (storage) with software raid (yes i know i need a raidcard) GeForce 2 PRO 64MB DDR, 2 Netgear Nics, 1 Creative Soundblaster 56k Modem (I ping bout 140 with it) Antec case Black, 3 case fans, 330 watt psu nice.
I Got a stock HEATSINK On it for now, i believe the heatsink rpm is about 4660, My vcore is at defaulted (0.000+) Case temp: 78F, CPU Temp: 108 Idle, 110-112 Load.
It's overclocked now at a 153 ratio i believe, 10.5x multiplier, and i believe a 1.55 ghz, 1800xp, before i had it running at a 1900 xp, i also tryed 2ghz, but it gave me a blue flash not screen just flash, and would restart. I Also have Windows XP Pro, Dualbooted with Win2k Pro server, With a STOCK Cooling fan can take you far ways, As far as i went, It was all my case cooling, Im looking at a Dragon orb 3 7200 RPM Fan. They look real nice, Tell me your recommendiations for cooling.
Thanks for all the help guys. I guess I figured out that the problem really lies on my Elsa MX400. I might as well just think of getting a new card. I'm looking at the GF2 Ti200 series. Which should I get ?
Elsa 516 Ti200 (5ns)
Leadtek Winfast Ti200 (4ns)
I want something that wont hold me back when I'm running at high FSB's and speed !. I like that Gainward but its expensive :)

FYI: My XP 1600+ will do the sandra burn in, prime95, and cpu stability tester on torture mode all at the same time perfectly stable for over 24 hours straight at 1644Mhz, but it'll lock up or crash to the desktop within a couple hours of playing tribes 2 or UT. I have to bring it down to 1620 to be stable in everything. Those burn-in programs really aren't all they advertise to be.

I have to agree with this guy. Running high fsb's in the 150's & 160's and you're just asking for it, especially running high intensive 3d games. I know because it has happened to me.
I doubt a new Vcard will help you, gouki. But there's always hope. Good luck and let us know.
Well, I was running my T-bird at 9 x 166 but there wasnt any lock-up with the 3D card. If it could handle 166 FSB, I really dont get why its freezing at 161 FSB.
I have no idea whatsoever whats the bottleneck :P Anyway, I'm still deciding which to buy. The Elsa looks great but only with a 5ns RAM. The Leadtek looks lousy but it comes with a 4ns RAM. Perhaps I'll just wait !
Isn't Sandra burn-in a good way of testing the CPU ?
Your CPU probably can handle that speed, but it seems your memory can't that's why your 3D games crap out, but your benchmark apps doesn't. 3D games push alot of textures through the memory (memory onboard the card AND system memory).

What OS r u using.
if you using win2k might want to get SP2 and get a patch for AGP freeze.
I have the same trouble when running any game with OpenGL
now it better and dosen't hang.
also if u use VIA chipset on the card get the latest driver.
Hope this help.
Im using WinXP PRO and I havent did any patch on it. I guess I'll install the 4in1 later and see how it goes. I hope it solves it :)
Btw, I tried pushing all the way to 2.1 V for 1.72 Ghz on my XP but still no go ?. Why is it so ?.

I'm a newbie to overclocking and I have a AthlonXP 1600+@1.6GHz( 10.5 x 152 FSB). I booted up Win2k and ran some benchmarks fine. But when I restarted, I got a message saying that I have corrupted files and to run CHKDSK. What should I do first? Should I lower back down to stock specs and do a recovery setup(if possible w/o losing data) OR do I have to reinstall win2k from scratch. Please let me know.
Should I lower the FSB by doing 12.0 x 133 FSB = 1.6GHz?!?!?
Thanks!
System:
AthlonXP 1600+@1.53GHz (10.5 x 145)
Alpha PAL8045 w/Delta 68cfm
VisionTek Geforce3 Ti-200
Crucial 256 MB PC2100 DDR
20GB WD HD
Antec SX1040B 400w PS
Windows 2000 Pro

Chances are if you lower your FSB then your problems will go away. Try it and see. Increasing the FSB causes the |HD to give weird readings.

I'm having problem trying to unlock my Athlon XP 1600+. I superglued the gaps and used conductive silver epoxy(from CrazyPC) to connect the bridges in L1. When I booted up, the CPU either shows up as a Athlon 1200MHz or AthlonXP 1444MHz(if i remember correctly). I got this on my first try so I did it again from scratch. I got the same thing. Could you help me out? Do you think is the silver epoxy(not being too conductive) or what am I doing wrong? Any tips! Thanks!

Crossing connections somewhere. need to redo and be very carefull. You are using tape to make sure you aren't crossing over right? Make sure the tape is attached good and pushed down flush with the chip to ensure no crossing of Laquer.
Well, I've got a new Leadtek GF2 Ti200. It doesnt solve my problems ! :( It still freezes so I guess my CPU is the bottle neck after all.
I tried unlocking my CPU but I had no luck with it and I simple screwed up everything ! .. :(
Why is it that even if I put in 2.1 V, it is still unstable ?

gouki, 1.7 GHz is an excellent overclock for that cpu. I don't understand why you don't think it is. Most people can't get there XP1600's past 1.57 GHz. From what I've seen, the XP1500's actually o/c better than the XP1600's.
The only way you are going to see a stable 1.7GHz is if you use a VaporChill, or a peltier and water-cooling to drop your cpu to about 0C. Then, maybe it will be stable running 3d games. But I think that's a big maybe. It's hard to have a stable system with high fsb's while running games. It can be stable doing everything and anything else, except for playing games.
I know that the Epox 8KHA+ beta Bios drivers have a /5 divider that kicks in at about 166 fsb. So specs for your cards come down quite a bit. This might allow you to run games. But still iffy.
Ok, I get to unlock the multiplier and its now at 9.5 x 175. Here's my Sandra bench :) Im a happy guy now .. LOL
Here is my 3dmark2001 scores for my Leadtek Winfast GF2Ti200 overclocked at 270 Core, 513 Memory. It could still go higher but this is what I get from preliminary overclocking :)

How's RTCW running?
Any more lock-ups ?
Well, I haven't really tried playing it for hours but it doenst hang anymore so far :) Up till now, I've got no idea what causes the lock-ups !. Is it the CPU or the graphics card ?
