ok before i had a 5.0 vista score with 2gb

now im running 4gb (added a second pair of the g.skills i already had)

i finally got the OS (ultimate x64) detecting all of the ram

i had to enable memory hole or whatever its called in my bios (2.20 939dual-sata2)

ok now to my question

i have not changed clock speeds, timings, or anything and my memory score went from 5.0 to 4.7

is 4gb ram inherently slower than 2gb?

it definately doesnt feel like ive taken a performance hit.

any insight in the issue is appreciated

What are the individual scores?

i put my core up 5 mhz and now they are

proc 5.1
mem 4.8
gpx 5.9
gaming gpx 5.9
HD 5.6

VISTA bases its total score off the lowest individual score. Did you get 4.8 this time? Do you have any memory settings on auto? Maybe some auto setting is automatically being turned down due to the added stress on the MoBo from the additional 2 sticks.

no offense, but i dont care about the total vista score

just asking in general does 4gb perform slower than 2gb?

Sorry about the total score thing...I had mis-read your 1st post. But, I was still driving at the fact that 4 sticks puts a lot more stress on the mobo, and perhaps if you have some setting on auto that the MoBo is automatically loosening some timings, or sub-timings to compensate for the increased stress of 4 sticks.

I'm not exactly sure how VISTA measures your RAM performance, but perhaps it looks more at the speed/timings/latency and once you get over say 2GB doesn't see any benefit to the additional amount of RAM.

In general, though, no...4GB shouldn't perform slower than 2GB.

As jason has already pointed out. Your mem controller with 4 sticks of ram is very stressed. In order for it to detect speeds correctly, you must manually set them in the bios.

before my 4gb upgrade i was running:

285x9 = 2565
5/6 divider, ram @ 240

ive been running it on the following settings for a day now

260x9 =2340
5/6 divider, ram @ 217

going to start increasing the bus bit by bit with testing

ps using timings of 2.5 3 3 5 on each setting

In the 1st post you said:

i have not changed clock speeds, timings, or anything and my memory score went from 5.0 to 4.7

Now your saying your running at a lower speed.

Running your RAM slower will reduce your VISTA memory score. 4GB has no advantage over 2GB unless you are running programs that use massive amounts of RAM.

Neither do i =]

Technically, yes, since your command rate is decreased and you are using 4 modules instead of 2. But, in real life situations, 4GB is so much better because you can run many applications at high speeds!
