Hi Team 32,
After receiving another $500+ power bill this month I am stopping production cold turkey. I wish you guys the best.

I hear you CyberRad. My bill was $340 up from a usual $140. I haven't stopped just yet but the thought has crossed my mind.

I was able to get away with the first one but now i'm not able to. It would be different if my renters would stop negging on thier payments.

I sure know how you feel! but these couple days is pretty cool, cool enough to open up the windows and turn off the a/c! that will help!!

Yeah... I havn't heard the AC kick on since Thursday.

If only our hardware and energy donations could be tax deductable as a charitable donation. Now that would be sweet
Good luck to you
Yeah, I know the feeling... I'm dreading ConEd's reassessment of my balanced payment plan in November. With the $350 "extra" bill I had in June I know it isn't going to be pleasant. As for the A/C, I turned the bedroom one off yesterday and that went OK so I turned the living room one off this morning--I've turned it back on, 5 machines running was just too much for the breeze I was getting. Maybe next week if it cools off a little more.

Absolutely. I'm a little surprised at how much energy even one p4 folding 24/7 makes. I think we're paying an extra 30 to 40 a month. I think of it as my regular charity donation... But the IRS disagrees!
Best to keep folding to a minimal during summer rates and then use it to heat your house during the winter...

Hate to hear that CyberRad... but we've all got to do what we've got to do.
Hope to see you back in the Winter months!
Lower that power bill - That's another reason to move away from the P4's - and towards the C2D's. Even the AMD dual-core's I had, used about one-third more power than their replacement E6700's - both running at stock (nearly), speeds.
I don't know how Harlam does it - must have stock in the electric company?
I'm seriously taken aback by those with multiple P4's though! OMG!!
A shame to see you go ... hopefully only temporarily.
Like others said , the heat will offset fall, winter and spring heating. Temps have been perfect around here the last week with the house nice and comfy from the farms heat. Its warming up a bit this week but not to where a/c will be running.

Turn off your 2 P4's and you'll be fine. :D :p
Hopefully you'll be back.
Thanks for hanging in there.

Each of my DCs pulls ~200watts based on my readings from the APC monitor software. Draw at full load for that APC is just over 600watts, which supports three rigs.
Once we get back on the low rate (next month) the power bill will hopefully go sub-$200 again. Fact is... it gets really hot here in the summer and we have a decently large house to cool... and I like it cold! 72F if I have my way. :D

Sorry to see you go man, hopefully is going to be a very brief and temporary thing.

I'm feelin' yer pain. My EL bill went to almost $900(two month billing). Thankfully i've only gotten one. But now the pool and A/C is off. Should bring the bill waaaaaay downnnnn!;)

That's kinda easy to say in Oregon. I remember when I lived in Coos Bay, just open a window during the summer, and all was good. During the winter, close that window, and the computer kept the house nice and warm. Now I am in Arizona, and it seems to be a different story. 2 computers and a PS3 running 24/7 seem to keep the house at a nice warm temperature during the summer. It's a good thing I live in a place where all utilities are paid, otherwise I would be shutting down atleast the PS3 and one of the rigs regularly.
Sorry to see you going CR, I hope to see you back in the winter months. Just keep the furnace at a lower setting and let the rigs take care of the rest.

For reals, my Pentium D did a great job keeping my place warm last winter. FAH makes for a great winter heater, and in my case cheaper then running a traditional heater.

I hope to be back as soon as I get another tenet that will actually pay there rent. I'm not sure if having the rigs fold 24/7 in the winter will lower my oil bills or not. In theroy it might but the oil heat is all new to me. I'll have to try it out when it starts getting into oct/nov.
See you guys then.
BTW: I only have one p4 in the house. The other 4 rigs were at work sitting idle but I have since had to assign them to new employees.

Just a thought, if the AC running to compensate for the heat coming from your folding rigs is mostly what is driving up the bill. Then would water cooling all the rigs and placing the radiator outside make a big difference? You would basicly be transfering most of the heat outside. Then bring it inside during the winter to offset the heating bill.

With the A/C running last year and having almost as many rigs running as last year but suspended for most of the time my electric bill was around 300 for the hotter months here. I'll be the first to tell you and anyone that my A/C sucks! It can't even sustain 80f when it is 100f outside. I've got a guy coming in to see what he thinks is the major problem besides that fact that my actual ducts look like 1 1/2" holes in the ceilling on the corners. I've never seen a house with this. The air coming out is pretty cold but I don't think it is enough flow to cool the house. As soon as the tax return comes this will be the first to be replaced.
Anyways back to my point. I think the rigs are a major contribution to the bills themselves not just the a/c.

but then you are using 90+F air temp to cool the water! (assuming it's not under direct sunlight!)

still. remember, you can never cool it below ambient w/ watercooling. 90+F air temp blow through the fins, the fins will never go below 90+F.

Why shouldn't Folding be tax deductable if you meet all the rules?
This would be all I can think of:
1. The IRS recognizes FAH as a legitimate charity.
2. FAH thanks you for your donation of xxxxx.
3. You have a separate electrical meter, which is connected only to your Folding PCs. You need paper proof of your costs, not just the reading from a wattage meter. Too bad this necessitates the monthly flat fees as well.
This should work like people who donate their time and car for Meals on Wheels, they get to write off xx cents per mile.
Also see if you can fold strictly off peak at a reduced rate.

I'm afraid that alone would be a stumbling block.
I wonder if anyone has suggested to Pande that he try to set it up. Probably so.
I bet it would increase participation, though! :D
Good idea but can you imagine the abuse?
23/7 hours of gaming with fah in the background. The 1 hour missing is for eating sleeping and going to the john.:D

One way to reduce abuse would be if FAH simply assigns a dollar value to a WU the same way it assigns point. Then they would have to offer 1099s, which is another expense. :bang head
But one has to wonder even with the "Meals on Wheels" exemption. What's to stop someone from claiming double or even 10X their actual mileage?

Current Folders:
1x C2Q Q6600 B3 - SMP
1x C2D E6600 - SMP
1x C2D E4300 - SMP
1x P4 3ghz - SMP
4x P4 630 - SMP
Correct me if I am wrong here but I think you could turn off all five P4's, cut your bill by more than 50% and maintain far more than 50% of your current point total.
My other question is - are you power supplies APFC? And if the answer is "some" then by all means move them to the 3 folding machine you would have left.
This is odd, me trying to cheer you on, because I fold for a different team. Still, is there no compromise to be made here? Try this for one month and see what the results are.
Please?

Thats when the Audits come in, Point A to B is so many miles, and that they can check.
At least a laptop in my job or my wifes job are both write offs and would raise no flags. Sadly neither of us have one.

Hi Team 32,
After receiving another $500+ power bill this month I am stopping production cold turkey. I wish you guys the best.
I did that one month(well, not COLD turkey...nevertheless a big reduction); I decided to do a major revamp of the farm...all quads, less rigs, pretty much the same production level. That brought my electric bill down from almost $500/mo. to well under $300.
Hope to see you back in-the-fold in the Fall. ;)

Looks like the weather for the next week is going to be cool so I am going to start up again on the three cores.
What is the wattage for a 478 P4 3.4Ghz?

Yikes, this thing is 130nm technology and Netburst technology as well.
I'm surprised it wasn't 125 watt TDP, only 89.

It was a comic? I've never seen it. I've had this name since the begining of the ICQ days. I still remember about 12 years ago when I first went online on my dad's computer trying to think of a name. Becuase my real name is Conrad (My father named me after a frog from a sunday paper comic strip) we decided that CyberRad would be a pretty cool name.

Well I was able to stave off folding for about 2 weeks or so and it looks like the bill is around $300. But this bill also includes the fact that I was able to turn off the AC for a week. Right now I only have the quad and the duos running and I am still putting up decent numbers.

What are your electric rates like? Are they as bad as NY? At 15 cents/KWH 24.7 I figured that to be just over 10 dollars a month.
Wish I had Canadian electric rates. :santa:
CyberRad

I'm not sure what they are. I know they are climbing due to some bill that was passed not to long ago. Maryland is sort of easing us into the new rate hike.

"Maryland is sort of easing us into the new rate hike."
Funny how in a very short time the Q6600 appears to be an energy hog to me, and I'm waiting for the 45nm processors before I go there. Meanwhile my X2 is folding with a mere 95 watts.
