I posted somewhere about a problem I was having with my system locking up. I am running a soyo dragon+ mobo with athlon xp and visiontek gf3 ti 200. Someone replied to my post saying there have been problems with via chipset/geforce 3 combos and there is some kind of patch that fixes the problem. Has anyone else heard about this? If this is true, it just seems strange that I haven't read anything about it before.

It wouldn't suprise me if there was a problem with the VIA and the GF3. Seems like its getting to the point where those VIA chipsets dont play nice with anything.

Have you tried the latest VIA 4 in 1's. Yeah, I know a root canal is better, but what can it hurt right?

If there is a problem I was not aware of it ,I am haveing no trouble with my setup.

Have you checked to see what your temps are like... idle and full load? When do you run into problems?

I'm using an alpha 8045 heatsink w/ panaflo 39cfm fan. If the temperature sensors are reasonably accurate, there is no heat problem. I ran 3dmark demo in a loop for 9 hours yesterday and the cpu temp said 39C.

The computer locked up for the first time after I had been playing Civilization 3 for much of the day(not exactly a lot of stress on the cpu or video card). After it locked up, I restarted the computer and started playing Civ3 again. Within 2 minutes, it locked up again. The next day, I ran 3dmark and within 2 hours it locked up. Yesterday I ran 3dmark for 9 hours with my tnt2 card installed and I ran into no problems.

Do you have your vid card oc'ed... heat may be an issue with your vid card alone... or perhaps memory...

I had my video card mildly overclocked when the first pair of lockups happened. When 3dmark locked up the card was not overclocked at all.

I had been running my video card more overclocked for 2 weeks with no problems at all. The problems didn't start until I upgraded my motherboard/ram a few days ago.

Ok, I installed the via 4 in 1 v4.36 drivers yesterday afternoon. I've been running 3dmark in a loop for about 14 hours now, and no lockups. After 6 hours, there was some kind of direct 3d error that caused the program to stop, but the system didn't crash or lockup so I just started the 3dmark loop again and it has been going fine ever since.

The 4.36 is suppose to help with the stability problem with VIA+NVidia GPU+Det Drivers. There is also a problem with W98SE+VIA+GF3 & the work around is to replace one of the variables then everything would be ok:beer:

My system still hasn't locked up again, but there was another error while running 3dmark this morning. I don't know what error it was, but windows shut the program and said something about recovering from an error. I also got a window asking me if I wanted to send the error report to microsoft, but I declined, of course.
