I'm not sure about how they designed the side thumb buttons, I'd have to try it out to see. Not as sexy as a Razer IMO but good bling with the built in LCD.

Edit: Linky (http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/gaming/productdetails.aspx?pid=100)

ugly as hell, I can't imagine either playing for 2+ hours with that thing or why MS abandoned an already great mouse shape.

Typical Microsoft imitation not inspiration. My G9 is much much better!

why would you ever want to decrease your DPI on the fly? I always liked the way Logitech's fit in my hand better anyway.

Well supposedly in game if you want to be speedy 180 guy you have high DPI, than swith to accurate sniper guy, you have low DPI> However, I have enough to worry about in a game than more buttons :P

On another note, it is nice to switch DPI on the fly without having to open the driver if are going from gaming, to desktop to do some photoshop, than back to a game :)

Agree on the over-engineered comment. Logitech MX518 4-Ever. <3

Do I have to install software just to use the mouse as a mouse or is it like Razer where you are REQUIRED to install the software in order to scroll and such?

i LOVE my Logitech MX1000. Its my favorite mouse by FAR.

considering i like bigger mice, as i like to rest my entire hand on the mouse, and not have part of my hand rest on the desk. so i may like the feel of this Microsoft mouse.

Took me a few seconds to realise what's that. With the newest logitech mouse they are almost asking for the price of a mobo.
Overengineered and overpriced.

Actually you can plug a Razer Deathadder in and NEVER install the software and it will work just fine. Mine did. You only need the driver if you want to switch DPI and/or polling or adjust x/y sensitivity or map custom controls.

Interesting maybe I have a bad diamonback then?

I HAVE to install the software or I cant scroll, everytime I scroll down, it jumps back up.

Could be your DB is different I have no idea? The DA is my first Razer mouse. Had a MX518 before and it was the same. Worked fine without the drivers unless you wanted to do the fancy stuff.

It might be your DB because I went from a DB to a DA without installing drivers for both. All the buttons work as default (scroll up/down, navigate forward and back with the side buttons).
Maybe check your windows mouse settings to see what driver template its using (simple 2 button no scroll, or 3 button w/ scroll?)

For the OP, that mouse looks pretty unusable. My Death Adder fits so perfectly in my hand, I can't imagine piston type buttons coming out the side, or looking at my mouse mid game to see what DPI I'm on. Yes, DPI switching may be nice, but you should be able to tell on-screen when your DPI changes. Not by looking at a small, still-can't-find-it on the mouse LCD screen which inflates the price about $30-40 more than its actually worth (based on appearance). IMO, the LCD isn't what people might see it as. From the looks of it, it is an LCD like a wrist watch, with 3 boxes that 'fill' depending on your setting. *bore*

Its all about preference, so if you're a Logitech person, great. I do like their weight switching ideas. I'm personally a Razer person because their mice feel perfect out of the box.

Microsoft never had it right with mice IMHO.
(Perhaps a visit to the store to feel one will change my opinion, but based on looks and specs, this isn't a gamers mouse).

I'd have to feel it in person to judge the ergonomics. I love my MS Intellimouse, its lasted me like 6 years. I've never really been a fan of "gamer" mice, too much money when you can usually get a solid mouse for much less.

Another mx518 fan here..
I've had almost every Logitech and it's my fave.
Haven't tried the G7.
But I'm "game" for trying out that new Microsoft mouse. If Fry's get's in stock I'll give it a whirl.

Well I wouldn't toss this mouse if someone gave it to me as a present or anything....

But I wouldn't buy myself this as a present either =)

It took me a while to figure out the slide-out weight mechanism from the pictures - if it shot nerf arrows off of that things with one of those fancy programmable buttons i'd be sold =D!

Too happy with my mx1000 I suppose... I really hope Logitech re-releases the exact same mouse, possibly with an all 'psuedo-rubber' chassis, at some point so they're buy-able should this one ever break...

I'm gonna have to agree with the others, in my eyes the mx1000 is the best mouse logitech ever came out with it just fits your hand so great and has all the buttons you need. Matter of fact my girlfriiend has the G7 and she still begs me to trade my mx1000 with hers and I always refuse lol.. pity they discontinued it for the G7. As for the new MS mouse, it looks like a travesty in the making, way too busy and seems oddly shaped to be comfortable for long sessions.

ugh..i dunno about this mouse..my intellimouse explorer that i got back in '98 is still the best mouse i've used to date. i hope it doesnt break because i love the large mouse4 and 5 buttons on it...all the new mice have small little buttons that are a pain to use...if i find another mouse with larger mouse4 and 5 buttons i'd love to get it because this mouse has been good but it's gettin finicky

To revive this thread.

On a whim, I just picked this up to replace my Razer Diamondback I got off Woot a few years ago.

So far it fits my hand better then the DB, I am installing the software for it but only because I want to test it out and the mouse is pretty good quality. It comes with a total of 4 weights (3x 10g 1x5g) and 2 sets of additional feet.

Ill play with it a few days and see if my first impression holds true but so far I like it. Then again, I may have an issue with MS as a company but for whatever reason, they seem to make rock solid mice IMO.

Well almost 7 hours later and I have already gotten bored and modded the mouse, it comes from the factory with 2 oddly shaped (almost oval) 5mm Red LEDS at the rear.

Those are removed and replaced with 2 5mm Blue and 1 5mm White LED.

I am going to work now to see if I can mod the top and LCD (little 4 character baby) LEDs from Red to a different color.

Im honestly not even sure why the two rear LEDs are there as you could barely see them through the base of the mouse to begin with.

I tried out the new Sidewinder the other day, felt really plastic-y and flat bottomed/heavy. I was a huge fan of the MX1000 and when it died I got an MX518. I'm gonna look around to see if any place still sells the MX1000, if I could have that design with the G7's interchangable battery it would be mousing heaven.

Well it may look crazy, but it might actually be nice to use, I can't say. I remember when the boomslang first came out (and I actualy paid 75 bucks for it...which back then the most expensive mouse was 25 bucks). The boomslang looks very uncomfortable, but it's honestly the best mouse I've ever used. It was very heavy which I liked (which is why I like the weight tray in this mouse).
Hopefully the new boomslang with all optics is heavy as well, no idea though.

nice

Ya I checked this out at BB and I really didn't like the way it looked. Even worse than the pictures. But like it's been said before despite its looks it might actually be a real joy to use? I couldn't really do much with it at BB so I can't say yet.
