I just need some help with partitions..........I will be getting a 40gb HD, and I was wondering if I should partition it?

Should I just leave it as one big 40gigger (;) ) or should I aprtion it?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of partitioning?

(I am pretty sure my ASUS A7V266 - E mobo can read the whole thing, if that was a problem)

It all depends on how you like it and how organized you are. I would atleast have 2 partitions (1 data, 1 everything else). I have 3 partitions (1 system files, 1 data, and 1 program installs). Its easier when i want to format becasue i can just format c: and e: and keep all of my data. Its all up to your preferences. Sizes of partitions are up to you. If its like my setup, definately leave the most room for data and programs, not much is needed for system files.

Also with programs like partition magic you can always change your partitions if you don't like it the first time around.

THere really aren't any disadvantages. The advantages really outweight the disadvantages. THe only disadvantage i can think of is waiting for it to partition.

If you wanted to make a partiotion bigger or smaller, would you have to reformat the whole HD?

How many GB's do you have for your system files? What did you put on it?

i would also recommend having at least 2 partitions (alas, i am a sinner for i only have 1). but it would make it much easier when reinstalling an os. 1 for system, 1 for everything else. for the system partition i would say 2.0 gb max is necessary . you can also use partition magic to manage your partitions. you can expand, shirnk, add, or delete partitions w/ it. that reminds me, i do need to get a couple more 40 gigs for my raid, i only have 678 mb left of my current 80 gb's.

With that partition wizard, do you need to format the WHOLE HD to make a partition?
