View Full Version : Are my temps ok?
I've started using FreeNAS recently and with that I have the ability to monitor the drive temps. (I'm sure you can check with Windows too on local drives, but I don't know how.) Anyway, I put the rig together and had two drive very close and I noticed the temp would be peaking at 40C. Today I bought a gadget to allow my hang extra drives in the case so I could space the drives apart. I also added a cheap fan that doesn't seem to shift any air!!
Now the temp seems to peak at 30C now is that good or should I be trying for cooler temps?
30c is pretty good I would say

Google did a study with sever farms and found cooling hard drives kills them. It's better just to let them run hot than cool.

On the other hand I have had so many hard drives die in stuffy dusty beige boxes. I am kind of paranoid about them getting hot now. But I would never watercool or peltier them or anything LOL
Heatsink works for me

Why not Google it?

One of our key findings has been the lack of a consistent
pattern of higher failure rates for higher temperature
drives or for those drives at higher utilization levels.
