View Full Version : how to stream live video
My brother is getting married in two weeks and he asked me to try to stream the wedding live over the web so that my father and the bride's family can watch the wedding from Brazil. Sadly the church where the wedding will be taking place only has dial up, so i went to verizon and got the wireless modem for my laptop, this week I'll order the capture card for the laptop in order to capture the audio and video, now I need help figuring out how to actually stream it over the web. This is very important to me, it is a sad thing that the parents of the bride and my dad are not able to see their children getting married and I'll will do my best so that they can at least see it. I got until oct 7th to get this going.
My first thought went to shoutcast. I looked a little on their forum they have a video streaming program called nullsoft but the issue is it's beta software. If you want to try it I would do a test stream to the parents before hand to make sure the connection works before hand. Also just be aware that you are going to need as big of an upload connection as you can get for it to run smoothly.
I'll let you know if I think of any other ways
There is the forum that talks about the software.

Take a look at VideoLan (http://www.videolan.org/). I've not used it in a number of years, but I have a streaming project coming up and plan on looking into it once again.

I have tried that its pretty easy, yet annoying to set up for the first time. First you gotta get hamachi, bridge the two machines under the same lan. Then select the audio and video stream. then on the machine thats receiving the video just put in the hamatchi ip and it should work. The good thing is you can control the quality output in vlc player too. it just takes some playing around.

Actually I think this is a better idea then what I had origionally said. But the one thing I would again do is do some test streams before the wedding. You want to make sure your setup works before hand and that the brides parents can connect properly and know what to do. You don't want to be trying it for the first time on wedding day and if something goes horribly wrong having to trouble shoot it there and then.
I plan on testing before hand, and since i'm on this verizon wireless I believe I should test it at the church to make sure i have a good enough signal to get good up speed. Also I have have an account with dreamhost which has streaming capabilities, I will look into how to do it as soon as I have some time. I apreciate the replies guys this is very important to me.
I tested the connection at the church yesterday and it wasn't very fast at all, the signal was weak and I managed 81Kbps upstream, which I don't think is enough but I would like confirmation on it.
