Ok I've had some water cooling gear kicking around and had some setup testing by cooling a TEC. All was fine... so I decided to try it on my cpu. Now atm I'm currently short of cash so I'm using a somewhat dubious looking water block. Seems to do the job... only problem is mounting it. I rigged a mounting system from Al sheet today and off I went...

Snag 1: my springs for tension are too long for my bolts. So foolish me, I tried without...
Snag 2: one of the 4 holes mounts came loose and I was too impatient to fix it...

I fired it up and it booted! at 9x150 too (on a AXIA 1G). Hit del to go to bios to check the temp... that's when bad things happened. The speaker let out what can only be described as a bray. Fairly low pitched noise much like a donkey... Uh oh says I and hits the power switch. Also noticed a suspicious smell... Thought it was barbecue time at the butcher ranch...

Decided that was enough watercooling for the moment and hooked back on my trusty hedgehog. Reset cmos to be sure and powred up...
It boots! WOOHOO! In fact seems to have sustained no damage at all Only change is I'm now a couple of degrees up as my hedgehog base is a little scratched due to mounting and unmounting it (I had it mirror lapped before).

So now I have three options as I see it.
1. I can remove the bolts and use some nylon studding I have kicking around and the springs.
2. I can try to get some smaller springs.
3. I can glue the block to my cpu.

1 and 2 rely on the current mounting being at all sound (I'm not sure it is). But 3 is permanent so I'm not sure what to do...

Not sure if I follow what your wanting.. but If Im guessing right...
I would suggest trying to get some better springs for it.. I personally wouldnt glue it.. to permenant... granted it could be taken off.. but to me still to risky... but lucks!~!

Can you cut the springs in half?

Just temporary of course. You probably should put the nylon bolts on. They'd give you the least bother down the road, and if you move to a pelt, won't transmit much heat to the cold side. They also won't short to anything (hey, accidents happen).

I use stainless steel, but was able to get custom nylon washers cut at work, so I don't worry about shorting to the board.

There you go, a short term and long term answer....such service.

Well TEC isn't an issue as the block is too small to fit one. I'll be moving to a maze2 if/when I go pelted.

I could cut the springs but that would lower the force. My 4 springs should exert 30 pounds between them.

As for the glue I'm thinking bad idea :)

I think I'll try to mod the mounting system some more. Atm it's a bracket the clips over the top. I'm going to mod it to glue to the side of the block (with 2500 psi epoxy). That will make it sit lower hence the springs will fit the bolts. Of course if it doesn't work I'll be stuck with metal arms on my block ;p

Mod complete, works perfectly :)
Gained 75MHz so far without any probs, going to try some more shortly.
