Weird issue with modem

Hi every one.

This is very weird.
first let me give information about the computer. I just put at a celeron 600 with ABIT SE6 and winXP.
Gforce2 MX200 32MB, Generic modem with PCTel chipset.

I try to connect to internet and is fine every thing is ok, able to connect at 50666bps. This computer I build for my girlfriend bro. then I bring it over to his house and try to connect to internet, the modem pick up the line but just get static. Get the static every time the modem pick up the line. The phone line is fine because I did use it to make a call.
I also plug the same modem in to his old computer and it connected fine.
So I reinstall winXP at that location but didn't make any different.
I then bring the computer back to my house and try to connect *bamb* it connected.
Any idea of what could be the case here?

just because you dont hear any static in a call does'nt mean there is'nt a line noise issue. Have your bro call the phone company and ask that a tech check the line.

the senario is work at my house when I build it.
Don't work at friend house.
bring back to my house and work again.

But anyhow it is working now. I swap my modem in it and now is fine.
