View Full Version : Corsair HX620 overheated ?
PSU is too hot eventhough the pc case is open. much hotter than OCZ 520w Powerstream run on the same system. I just replaced OCZ by HX620
Q6600@3.6ghz
Abit IP35 Pro
Ballistix PC8500
HD2600XT
how is your HX620 people ?
The HX620 I had was extremely quiet and the fan would always spin at a very low RPM but it stayed nice and cool. The air was lukewarm at most. Under load the fan would speed up a bit but it never really got hot.
Cool and quiet running since day one,as is my HX520.Whats hot to you may be cool to me,measure the temp and then report here.

yeah the fan is very quiet.. mine runs very hot.. I got a faulty one ?

I don't have the thing to measure the temp but i can tell you it's hot not warm at all.
My HX520 is blowing out room temperature air at 1CFM >_>'
I would try to get something to measure the temperature.

Yuppers, measure it first,it may not be as hot as you think.

Is your PSU sucking hot air from inside your case? That would be just about the only reason one of these bad boys is blowing out hot air.
what do you guys use to measure the temp ? I think i need to RMA it. my OCZ 520w Powerstream runs just a bit warm but this bad boy is not warm at all. it's hot enough to burn 7 years old boy hand

PC case is open so it's not too much hot air inside the case
My 620W feels warm to the touch a lot of the time, it doesn't seem overly hot though.. The fan spins very slowly on these , so they may run a bit warmer.

The many Corsair PSUs I have built rigs with were all warm. That is normal as the air in your case is naturally going to be hotter than the air outside it. If your PSU burns you when you touch it though, that is probably going to be a problem.

What type of case do you use?
I ones worked on customers computer that had the PSU upside down, which basically staved the PSU for air. Is your PSU's orientation optimal for recieving air?

case looks the same design as the link but mine is aluminum with side windows
RMA it. If that fails, give it to me for free and enjoy your new PSU.

shipping will cost me at least $15 bucks if i RMA. I modded a 82mm case fan on the back of the PSU to suck the hot air out but it still hot. I believe it's a defected one, but i'll live with it until it dead. I don't want to RMA and corsair gonna send me another hot one. the final price of this PSU will cost more than 200$ including RMA shipping.
mine never really gets more than warm not even after a night of orthos or a couple hours of gaming. I have my armor set up for optimal air flow though with 9 low speed yate loon 120's or you can call it ghetto modded with alot of quiet yate loons. Best air cooling ever, even beats the 900 I had.

how the hell you mod it man? i'm thinking to replace with a stronger fan. Corsair fan is real slow doesn't do a good job.
can i see some screenshots of your modded?
I dont have access to the rig till I get my card tomorrow, pic are on one of the HDD's
Basically i got it cheap off someone and I ripped all the BS out of it and off the front.
I took 120mm fans and glued them together in a stacked fashion in the front of the case sucking in from the huge empty area in the front, room for 1 rom only which is all I need and sunbeam fan controller.
3 in the very front then 2 in front of the those.
I use the back cage with the 90mm pushing in on 3 hard drives and my drives run like 32c and the psu never gets hot.
I have the 120 in the back pushing out and I also have another 120 on the bottum of the case pushing up at an angle in front of the other 5 and the air goes under the gfx card and out thru the expansion slots which are all uncovered aside from 3.
I have 2x120's on the gemini HS also blowing down on the mobo and a amd 64 fan off a old HS glued to the NB blowing towards the mobo also lol.
The loudest thing in my case is always the gfx card ! these yate loons are silent as hell.
basically the bottum of the case exhausts thru the expansion slots and the heat above the card goes out thru the 120mm
I tried the 90mm behind the HDD's both ways and the drives ran cooler with it blowing in and I didnt notice a difference in the psu temps.
By having the drives next to the psu they run a couple degress warmer I would imagine, but by putting all those fans in the front I gained much better temps thru the whole case and I actually got better temps than I did with 900.
This armor is my beater case lol It was kind of an experiment that worked out well. I could never find a case that was big enuff inside for my liking and not HUGE like a stacker. This case is relatively small for a full tower dimensionally on the outside while still having plenty of room after I ripped all the garbage out of the inside. at first i wasnt happy with the temps I was getting with the stock setup. I also hate those stupid flaps in the front. Now that I think of it, this case was actually a kandalf, which is basically an armor with that extra door thing the flaps close around. I got tired of switching cases and I got ****ed everytime I knicked the paint job or dented it or whatever.
With this case... I dont care. its my warhorse case and I will probably never buy another one.
*****, the PSU is about dying on me. Right now if i go to the BIOS change the settings==>Save==>Exit==>System power up in less than 1 second then die. the fans spinning, the case led, MOBO led, keyboard led turn on then completely shut off in less than 1 second. no way i can save the BIOS. I notice the PSU fan spins very, very slow. I took it out put the OCZ 520w powerstream back then the system works perfectly. shuold i try Corsair again ? I love OCZ powerstream
I think the OCZ built better quality/material than Corsair due to their weights. Corsair is much lighter than OCZ. that's what i think

I'd disagree with that. The Topower based Powerstreams had a much higher failure rate than the Corsairs do... there's a reason OCZ stopped sourcing from Topower, after all. I'd RMA the Corsair and enjoy the replacement - they're not going to send a defective unit to replace a defective unit ;)
You got a bad one - it happens to them all.
My friend has the same problem as mine. his corsair 620w the fan doesn't want to spin==>overheated. my corsair i just bought it i think less than 2 weeks and his corsair is less than a week, both of us have the same issue. why they don't make 2 fans like before instead of 1 big fan? i don't mind a little noise comes from the PSU.
If you RMA, try to talk to someone one on one. I'm sure they can wave the RMA fee.
Replacing the fan would work as well, or putting a 80mm or 120mm on it.
RMA it and talk to the reps (Yellowbeard XMS on ocforums) regarding replacing it. If it is getting that hot that fast at stock, I suspect that one of the switching transistors or voltage regulators are not making proper contact with the HS.
this psu doesnt need more than one fan or a fan that spins faster. you guys must have some ventilation/heat problems.

Just RMA it, if the new one is hot then you know its how your system is cooled that is causing the issues.
here's another guy has exact the same issue as mine

it seems like either the Corsair psu was defected or didn't compatible with Abit IP35 Pro. I will return the PSU for refund. Corsair nightmares me lol
bbq, what is the 5VSB current on that unit? If this is not a widespread problem, I'd also look at the mainboard.

I don't remember exact number but the voltages are very good. i think 5VSB is about 4.98v, rest of them are at or above the specs.
First, i thought the mobo issue then i bought another mobo at microcenter (local store) but the problem is still there, then i replaced the HX620 by OCZ 520w powerstream. the funny thing is i bought HX620 to replace the OCZ 520w but now the OCZ takes the job back.
man, if i RMA for refund they will charge me 15% for restocking fee and about $15 ship to RMA . poor .. corsair causes me pay a lot, not a nice guy lol.
dude get a replacement, you got a defective one
its one of the best psu's on the market, all hardware has a failure rateand corsairs rma is pretty damn good, get over it.

I can't ship to Corsair. it's still under warranty from clubit.
why i have to pay for the RMA shipping while it's not my fault?
CAll up Corsair. Did you contact Yellowbeard XMS on these forums?

30 from clubit right ? and who says that corsair ? just wait it out then and send it after the 30 days....
you always have to pay to ship rma, would you rather have to spend another $125 on a psu ?

FWIW, I just built an IP-35 Pro system to test our memory and PSUs with. There is no compatiblity issue that I can find on my specific setup and in checking with our RMA department. The board runs great so far.

I don't know about compatibility. maybe i and this guy have the defected ones. we have exact the same issue.
