Weird iissue with modem

Hi every one.

This is very weird.
first let me give information about the computer. I just put at a celeron 600 with ABIT SE6 and winXP.
Gforce2 MX200 32MB, Generic modem with PCTel chipset.

I try to connect to internet and is fine every thing is ok, able to connect at 50666bps. This computer I build for my girlfriend bro. then I bring it over to his house and try to connect to internet, the modem pick up the line but just get static. Get the static every time the modem pick up the line. The phone line is fine because I did use it to make a call.
I also plug the same modem in to his old computer and it connected fine.
So I reinstall winXP at that location but didn't make any different.
I then bring the computer back to my house and try to connect *bamb* it connected.
Any idea of what could be the case here?

When you put that modem in his old computer did you use the same wall jack?

Any other devices using the phone wiring in that house ? just because the phone was ok does not mean the modem will be / a modem needs a much cleaner line. just for fun unplug whatever else is on that line and try it then.

Plan B / could be simple RF interference

No other device using the phone line and it using tone.
I'm going to try another modem and maybe install win9x/w2k instead of XP.
