Which is better prioce not being an issue?
Reason I ask is I saw a great deal on the 2900XT (300 bucks) and most benches I've seen place it slightly ahead.

Given that choice I would choose the 2900. When you take price and performance out of the equation I prefer ATI as I feel it looks better in games.

I think most people will say the 8800GTS 640mb is the better card.

The 2900XT is a bit better overall...
But damn does it haul arse on a good overclock, stock cooling can get you up to 825+ core, turn up the fan and 850MHz isn't a problem.

Pros:
-1-Best at resolution scaling(#2)
-2-Massive amount of memory bandwidth so the thing does not choke on the most intensive scenes with millions of polygons and many massive textures(the first video card that does not choke on OBLIVION's HD grass/foliage mod)
-3-Good overclocker.
Cons:
-1-AA kills performance, you're better off playing games at 2500x1600 then 1980x1200 with 12xAA.

What are we going to tackle this question every week?

The GTS 640 has more memory, performs better with AA enabled and "does not choke on the most intensive scenes" (I have Oblivion and my 8800GTS 640 does NOT choke.)

The G80 series is still superior unless you're only counting certain synthetic benchmarks,

"does not choke on the most intensive scenes" (I have Oblivion and my 8800GTS 640 does NOT choke.)Have you tried to run a scene with over 12 million polygons and 1Gb of RAW textures in MAYA... My workstation has a 2900XT(1Gb) in it and my Boss has a 8800Ultra, guess who gets the better framerate?

The 2900XT has it's niche.

And the G80's superiority only works off the flaws of the R600... what flaw? No "real" AA support. It's not much better at anything else.

Oblivion completely maxed out at 1920x1080(2xAA, no AA when i play at 1200 becaise I'm a bit low on memory and the pixels are soo much smaller on the 24" vs the 42") with HD texture and model packs slows my GTS down a lot, not from a lack of memory(I would of been in the clear with only a few more Mb), but because there's not as much memory bandwidth, i solved the problem by overclocking my GTS's memory so it's no longer a problem, but on stock I did get pretty bad framedrops if there was too many large textures on scene.

The 2900XT has it's advantages.

How do you know it's not from a lack of memory? I haven't had any problems playing Oblivion at high resolutions...

It does not do much on nVidia GPUs, but it can still monitor the basics.

...what the hell is it? :) Everything it does is stated right on the page I linked.
Basically it monitors all GPU and D3D activity.

It works with active cats but it does not recognize the nvidia GPU so I only get a few memory(some DirectX specific information) readings that shows where the API is storing all active memory, in the GPU or the allocated amount of system RAM. All active assets just barely fit in the 320Mb available, and the system RAM does have to be accessed very frequently, but there's nothing time-critical being transfered so I can't say I'm suffering from a lack of memory on the GTS 320Mb.

haha im still playing cs 1.6 at 640x res

Playing with no AA sucks. =T I'd choose no AA if it meant playing at 4mp resolution over 2mp. ;)
If you have a display that can take advantage of the max output res of these things you can't really care the least bit because the pixels are tiny.

That is a tuff one. I play at 1680x1050 so I still need AA. I would prob pick the 8800 but that is just me.

How badly is the 2900 hit by adding say, 4xAA? Is it something disastrous like a 50% drop in fps or something?

How badly is the 2900 hit by adding say, 4xAA? Is it something disastrous like a 50% drop in fps or something? At 4x It's more like %5(2x is pretty much the same)... bump the core clock a bit and you can solve that problem, 600MHz core stock, and you can hit 840 on stock.
If you wanted something like a %50 drop you'd have to force an AA level over 12x...

I honestly believe the XT is not quite worth the money, but the PRO a great buy.

Thanks for the info, I'm definitely buying a graphics card soon, so it'll probably be a 2900 Pro or one of the new 2950s. I wonder how well those will perform.
