View Full Version : Build your own Super computer???
Hey guys!
(I am assuming this goes here, since super computing deals with networks)
Anyways, I remember scanning through the net a while back, and I happened to come across a way to turn your old computers into a cluster (group) that would work together to run programs on a host computer more efficiently.
Has any one seen anything about this, or was I just up too late that night?
(I think it was some sort of program or something, I'm looking into it now)
Also, does anyone think that it would have a practical use?
EDIT:
Found a LINK (http://www.webstreet.com/super_computer.htm) about it.
Seems a bit like fun eh?

distibuted computing.
beowolf cluster.
it's best to use identicle computers so that one isn't the bottleneck for the rest, it's also best to use gigabit ethernet so the network isn't the bottleneck.
there's been a few people who have tested out clustering xboxes running linux to see if it might make a feasible computer, but i think they all came to the same conclusion: it's not.

I seen something about people trying to cluster with furbies.... (needless to day, that didn't work out)
Anyways, I think I found enough incentive to actually cluster, by watching this youtube video (http://youtube.com/watch?v=cqB01Cp_wPM).
Now, that's a project worth doing!
2-D becomes 3-D! Only 12 Linux clusters needed and 24 monitors...
Quake 3 running at 10240x3072 resolution at 15-30 FPS

holly bejezus now thats some resolution.
anyways OP what program r u runnign that needs more cpu powa

I agree.

..... for people that fold/crunch I guess...
..... and for people who want extreme resolutions in games...
..... and for kicks...
..... and showing off that you have that much power...
..... GETTING THE ULTIMATE 3DMARK06 SCORE!!!!
(would that really work)???
I'm thinking this is the next step in the evolution of games... to immerse you more into the game. Create a dome out of monitors!

(would that really work)???Well, not that one unless you had HUGE network bandwidth. 10/100/1000/2000 would choke it horribly.

Really? 1000 would choke it??? We are talking about 1Gbit data rate right? I'd assume that would be fast enough...
I tell you what, when I go to/get out of college and buy a house, I'm going to build a squareular room (I know, it's not a word) and fill it up with TONS of cheap CRT monitors. The ultimate gaming dome.. cube.. thing hehe... also.. a built in freezer... hehe.. to combat EXTREME amounts of heat...
I will invite all OCF members to join me in nights of fun hehe...
