Asus P5WD2 Premium (Intel 955x) - best CPU?

Apologies if I'm asking a stupid question, but I'm looking for the most powerful stock CPU for the above board. I can't source a 940 any more and desperately need to upgraded from the crappy celeronD it's currently running.

The fastest CPU that the i955 supports would be the Presler Pentium D 950 (available for $250 at newegg). But, since you have a decent overclocking motherboard, I would get the Pentium D 925 instead for $115 (newegg price) plus a good heatsink and then O/C it to 4 gig. Heck, my old Presler could easily do 4.5 gig stable (watercooled). If you don't live in the USA, then disregard the newegg.com references.

The 955 extreme will run on that board too with the right BIOS... though prolly not something you've want to pay for :P 3.46 / 1066 / 2x2mb cache

It's hot as hell and prolly not worth it over the presler 950.

I would make use of it by selling it. If a 950 is $250, that is a solid e4x00 setup right there (cpu+mobo). If he sold his P5WDH then he's in e6750 territory (those mobos still go for a lot on ebay).

Some things become obsolete. Learn to live with it, and don't waste any money on old P4/PD setups.
