My computer is pretty loud, with the HSF on the processor. I can live with it, but if I don't have to, why?

Well, my budget isn't very large, so a lot of things are just out of the question, but I had this concept...

Case in a Box

Essentially, I put my case inside an insulated box. To get air to it, I just make wind tunnels where the fans are, that extend outside the box.

Perhaps, even make baffles for the wind tunnels that muffles the sound further, but doesn't impede airflow?

I know, kinda cheesy, but on a budget, I could use carpet remnants and a cardboard box big enough to enclose the case.

Thoughts?

If you have powerful blowholes, then the noise will still come out of these :(

You can try it, but I doubt you'll get the airflow you want with baffles on the ducts.
I'd also try a 7volt mod to quiet the case fans. It's free.
The cardboard box idea could be tried, as it's reversable...who knows, maybe it would work. Try the carpet on the inside of the box, it'll deaden sound better.
Make sure your temps run ok!

I have one pc in a cardboard box, but I don't know what effect it will have on noise (the best part is here) since it is a dual PII 400---in an AMD Extreme Performance box!:D

I have no case that this old rig would fit in, so I did the box bit- 1 exhaust fan next to the cpus, and the psu, hard drive and cd-rom are outside, so temps are excellent.

I don't consider this a permanent case, just a way of testing construction ideas: one of these days a custom case is on my list of things to do.

But I posted just as a "proof of concept" kind of thing.
