Ok, I just got a new network hub from a friend without the instructions, so i am trying to figure this out. I have 4 network jacks and a little switch that can be either pointing to Normal or Uplink.
Thanx a lot.

hubs are pretty simple: 4 ports for pcs, or 3 pc and one uplink to another hub/switch/router. The uplink port will be on one end or the other.

The uplink switch is for a crossover cable or to connect directly to the modem/other hub/router.

yes, the internet is a LUXURY. it's a pitty when you "suffer" because you don't have your LUXURIES. If you really want to help out people why don't you buy internet service for some who is in folding or seti and help our teams out at the forums?

Normal when connected to a pc, uplink when connected to a hub, router or switch.

Uplink connects to another network connectivity device so that you can add extra machines to the network.

I have 2 pcs connected to my 4 port gateway router and 3 connected to a hub (in the cellar) that is uplinked to the router- 5 pcs connected total right now.....room for 9 more!

so if i just have 4 pcs connected i leave it at normal and if i have it connected to 2 pcs and 1 router i keep it on uplink?

Thats pretty much it: if you connect to a router- uplink!
