View Full Version : It's never cheap coming to these boards. "Ram question"

Made the mistake of looking around the boards again and poof, there goes the paycheck..
Anyhow I did some quick research and decided to go with the Q6600 over the E6850. Went with the Asus P35 Premium over the Abit IP35 Pro.
Now I've pretty much made up my mind on the ram and have until the morning before I submit the order for these items. This is the ram I'm looking at getting.
Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail (http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16820148069)
Now I made my pick from a link someone posted showing what chips each ram model was using. I'm going for a big overclock here. Have my new Apogee GTX waterblock and my EK-FC8800 GTX Waterblock for my 8800GTX, which I plan on vmodding. So I'm looking for good ram that I'm not paying anymore then what is listed..
thats a great choice.altho with a q6600s 9 multi you could likely get away with snagging some ballistix 6400s and still have no problem topping your cpu out.the newegg lanfest modules at are ocing pretty good from what ive seen if you fancy a little bling.

You know I wasn't even thinking about the 9x multiplier... Are the lanfest modules the one everyones bitching about because newegg put the big ugly stickers on them?
Anyhow I just want to make sure that I'm getting the microns.
yep those are the ones.no worries about getting micron tho,all of the ballistix/tracer ddr2 line run d9gmh.
Crucial is a division of Micron so I'm betting all their sticks carry Micron ICs. Like maxfly said, all the Ballistix/Tracer are going to carry D9GMH.

Well for the little extra money and headroom I'm thinking of staying with the 8500... Should be able to tighten them down pretty good or am I looking at that wrong.. Been a while.
thats pretty much what i theorize.at worst youll be running sweet timings even if you dont run them at 1066.
altho Reefa just posted a sweet deal on the tracer 6400s for $55 amir in the cyberdeals section.<---best deal on d9gmh ive seen in a looongtime.

thats why they clock better at x voltage with xx timeings. the rest get sent out for the "other guys" to use :)

Crucial has been the consumer side of Micron for a while. I've had nothing but good experiences dealing with they're company.
OP: Congrats on the final decision on the P5K Premium/Q6600, you'll be happy :P As what another post stated, you could get away with 6400 too and be able to get what you want out of the system.
I wanna see some benchies now! :P

I would stick with your first choice on memory never hurts to have a bit of head room.
What is there a huge difference between the 800 and 1066's? Seeing as I have the 800's and am wondering if I should upgrade in the future?

what kind of oc have you been able to get out of your 6400s?the 8500s oc great but if your 6400s are solid it might be a waste to upgrade.

I agree in that it would probably just be smarter to just get the 6400 and save the money.

Well, just checked and this deal is dead...they appear to be out of stock.
The non-Tracers are available, though and if new to Google Checkout, can be had for $45, after rebate.

For what its worth, all the Crucial Ballistix seem to clock well.

Well everything should be here on the 11th and in the mean time I need to find a good vmodd for the 8800GTX. Then it's going to be an overclocking weekend. *chills...*
