Downloading now... I may have to get around to a Vista install sooner than I thought if these are going to be such massive improvements to DX10.

all i can say is the 2900xt better run Unreal TOurnament 3 and crysis like a bat out of hell, else i will be very annoyed :(
at least the drivers are still improving though.

I took a performance hit in dx9 with x64. Lost about 10-20 fps.

Eww, planned to go X64 in a week or so. :-/

That's my biggest concern as well is switching to Vista and suffering the performance hit that seems to come with it. I'll probably install 64-bit Vista this weekend and see how it performs on the 2900, UT3 demo should be out within the next two weeks according to Epic so that'll be a good benchmark.
I'm liking the 2900xt in vista 64 so far, stock card 3.3ghz 19953 in 05 with the 7.9 drivers and bioshock plays awesome at 1680x1050 all settings in game max and 4xaa and 8xaf.

Ouch-- that sucks.
I'm not sure if the optimizations are really dx10 only. Has anyone else tried 7.10 on dx9?
There's rumour that this driver sets down graphics-quality in some games- any experiences here?
Don't know whether I shall believe this, been out of the GPU-market for quite some time (and enjoyed it...)

Gonna try tomorrow with a few games in DX9 then post results, gonna keep an eye on the graphics quality I really hope that's fake.
Would be really bad if they start the bench and faster but worse image quality "optimizations" war again.

These are huge DX10 performance increases...
If you look at the listed improvements carefully it appears the 7.10's are more of a hotfix to get a busted
CrossFire under ME-II / DX10 working correctly than anything else. It is pretty easy to get "big/huge"
performance gains if only one card of your CF pair was working before lol.
Viper
i scored higher in 05 with the 7.9's havnt tried in games yet.
there's 2 new sampling modes available under the Adaptive AA setting.

There's nothing to worry about with Vista 64bit. Try it. You'll like it. I've been running Vista business 64bit since July and I haven't encountered any problems with any of the latest games. I tested play in WoW, DDO, EQ, EQ2, Vanguard, Tabula Rasa, Pirates of the Burning Seas, Quake Wars, Stalker, Bioshock, World in Conflict, Oblivion, BF2, BF2142, COD:Airborne. I just picked up the Orange box and NWN2:Mask of the Betrayer today to play.

There's no working AA in Bioshock DX10.. how are you enabling it?
vista 64 bit is actually come along nicely I have no problems gaming on it. as far as bioshock is concerned i think the game just looks better with no AA than my 320 gts did.

CAN ANYONE CONFIRM THAT THE 7.10 DRIVER WORKS WITH AGP CARDS??????
Lost my OS after installing 7.9, couldn't roll back because of driver cleaner, then older drivers failed) Sitting at "standard vga" until a working ATI driver is available.)
X800XT AIW AGP
or this works too...

Nice, I've been leery about it as I work in the 3d industry and it's quite a gigantic hassle for the type of work I do. Work's offered up a license of Vista Ultimate so I might just toss that on the desktop this weekend and start fresh, give it a whirl :) Cheers for the update.
UT3 demo is out today, I will give it a shot on these drivers on the 2900XT.
vix you sticking with your Xt or did you rma for a new ultra ?
i got the card out of boredom and I got a pretty good deal on it so i couldnt resist. Not a bad card at all I must say. its a little loud but other than that I like.
Evga got RMA'd. Newegg was out of stock of the same one so they gave me a refund. The money should be back in my account by Tuesday or so, and then I will repurchase the 8800ultra from a different site.
COJ DX10 benchmark performance was still abysmal. 33max fps 14fps average @ 1680x1050 2xAA. The trees still looked like mesh screendoor and trashy too. (cat 7.10 on 2900XT)
No AA, high quality shadow, same res: 8 min, 44 max, 16 average. The trees looked better, but the railings and buildings looked really bad with moving lines. Still ran sluggish and not fluid.

shame the bloody installer won't let me install it. Took a look at the troubleshooting and the only XP64 related issue is with the .net 2.0 x64 framework which i've already got installed like they ask. Vista goes on tomorrow...
try isntall fro mthe temp folder where it places the files.

Single GPU Performance
Updated (10/10/07): The move from the 7.9 driver to the 7.10 "Shoot-em-up" Catalyst update didn't have much of an effect on our single graphics card performance at all. In only one or two instances did we see any changes, and neither was what I would call "drastic" enough to change my opinion on the HD 2900 XT for the current generation of DX10 games. The HD 2900 XT is a solid competitor against NVIDIA's 8800 GTS 640MB, but the Catalyst 7.10 driver hasn't done anything to overtake it.

As I expected, recently amd is all hype and delivers nothing.

I'm sorry, but this makes no sense. Your saying that by installing Cat 7.9 on windows (? didn't which version), that it jacked the whole OS and that you can't install in other drivers. Sorry, but that sounds like you got other issues. Also, IMHO you should just leave the drivers alone at this point for a x800xt, unless it's for changing OS. There will not be and has not been any performance increase for those in awhile.

then sell you card and replace it with and 8800gt when it comes out, then you'll have nothing to complain about...
I had two 8800gtx and twoo 8800 gts 320
I now have a 2900xt 512. I got a sweet deal on it and I am totally happy with it, the only card noticebly better is a 8800gtx and I paid hundreds less for this, I gotta go leave that dude heat lol.

Here is how you get ATI AGP cards to work with drivers 7.9 and up:
1. Install your last known working Catalyst drivers pre 7.9 if you haven't already (ie. 7.8,7.7, etc)
2. Go to "C:\windows\system32" and copy "ati3duag.dll" to your desktop.
3. Uninstall your drivers, use Driver Cleaner to remove any remnants of the drivers, and reboot.
4. Install Catalyst drivers 7.10, and reboot into safe mode.
5. Using the pre 7.9 file "ati3duag.dll" from the desktop,
OVERWRITE the "ati3duag.dll" file from 7.10 in the C:\Windows\system32 folder.
6. Reboot, and test it out with Dxdiag, or one of your fav games or whatever.

yes, thank you rainless, for yet another thoughtful contribution to a thread. It wouldn't be an AMD related thread without rainless' pointless criticism.
you dont have to poop on amd just cuz intell rules right now, amd64 was king fo the hill for 2 years before c2d hit.
I think amd will come back with a punch and in 18 months things will look a little different then they have looked.

yes, thank you rainless, for yet another thoughtful contribution to a thread. It wouldn't be an AMD related thread without rainless' pointless criticism. :beer:Agreed. The discussions here have gotten fairly irritating. I don't remember this much anti-Intel bantering going on when Pentium 4's were out and sucked for their entire life cycle compared to AMD.
On topic, however, the new driver release is running smooth with my X1950XTX, but I'm not playing anything right now that it couldn't already handle at max, so hard to compare.

Wether there was or wasn't anti-intel stuff then i dont' care. What I do know, is that I never went over to the intel section and posted in almost every thread that netburst sucks. This is getting ridiculous. Threads are starting to follow a formula:
1 post of value
3 posts of "zomg amd sucks"
1 post of value
2 posts with anti-amd opinions
1 post of value

I didn't see to much difference with cat 7.10 from 7.9, it was about 50 more points in 3dmark06.
Butnow the CCC doesnt load, it comes up with a failure to launch error on startup. I cbf re=installing them right now, CCC is **** anyway.
