*sigh* makes me sad I bought this one last month before they had a rebate. EXP 10/31

This Corsair is a rebranded Seasonic with a single 41A 12v rail. It has earned top marks from Wolf on Johnnyguru's site and from SilentPCReview. Quality/Price ratio doesn't get much better than this:

Shiny...
Does anyone know how low the price of this PSU has gone in the past?

It just came out a few months ago, so I'm figuring that this is the lowest it's ever gotten.

Btw, dude, you go to UofC?

The VX Corsairs are pretty new so there's not much price history. I'd say this is an excellent price though. Also Oklahoma Wolf thinks it's a CWT made PSU not Seasonic like the HX line, not a bad thing since the conclusion is that it performs very well.

I'm just happy that people are finally getting off the marketing gimmick that was split rails.

I'm just happy that people are finally getting off the marketing gimmick that was split rails.

Split rails weren't a marketing gimmick they were made to comply with the ATX spec that allows a maximum of 18A per 12V rail.

The ATX spec was simply BS that has no basis in engineering. If 18A max is truly safer, then why are all the industrial strength server supplies on single rails? As far as I see it, it was only a marketing gimmick, and I'm glad that the industry is moving away from it.

Perhaps the engineers who came up with the ATX spec would disagree with you. In any case it was not a marketing gimmick, there was a spec behind it and the marketing folks don't come up with industry standard specs. Now whether that spec was appropriate or not is another thing and maybe that's what you're getting at. *edit What I will agree was a marketing gimmick was the PSUs that had weak multiple rails, like 3x16A rails.

That is a damn good deal on that psu. I bought one of these about a month ago for around $100. I just put it in service the other day and it looks good and works well.

i woulda bought it... even though my ocz 600w split rail (18a, 20a) has never had any problems... but maybe a good thing it's OOS for my wallet.

would one say this is on par, better, or slightly worse than the corsair hx 520?

I would say that unless modular is a big deal for you this is probably a better choice than the HX520. It has 2 more SATA connectors and also an 8-pin PCIe connector. My impression from the jonnyguru review is that CWT is a good OEM just like Seasonic is for the HX.

Wish this had been out when I got my HX520 which will be used in a server, the additional SATA connectors would have been nice.

i do kinda want modular now... so a tough decision...

this 550w corsair is @ newegg for like $88 or so AR... so it's either that, or the 520 hx at clubit for about $90 ar...
but my ocz600w never showed me problems... we shall see...

Oh, I just looked at my HX520 cables, got the unit in August I think and both the modular PCI cables are 8-pin. They must have updated them since all the early reviews. For any system that these are likely to go in to I don't believe the power difference will matter, they aren't meant for dual graphics setups although they probably could run them. My HX520 did fine with an oc'd q6600, a single GTX and multiple drives.

Hmm... Although it's still out of stock, looks like a new rebate kicked in. Hopefully prices don't go back up when it comes back in stock.

Mad,

Mine has the 6 pin PCI-e modulars, bought it Jan. this year, so you're correct. The build code on it was Nov. 2006 and there was one revision update on mine since Jonny Guru tested it middle of last year. One of the items some don't consider is it looks like all the Corsair power supplies have a 5 year warranty.

OW just tested another new Corsair, TX750W, for Jonny Guru.

GM,

I don't know the minutia details on the manufacturing differences on all the Corsairs except what OW and Jonny test, but it appears there is no guesswork on what Corsairs are better than another, they all seem to be a matter of choice of power or modular without any sacrifice on quality and ratings.

Corsair has certainly entered the power supply market in a big way!

As for differences, I would put the CWT above the Seasonic built units for regulation (only on the 550W and below) but if you want to pick hairs Seasonic built units have marginally cleaner DC output (both units are well under ATX specs).
