View Full Version : Just want to verify that this PSU is dead.

Ran into some problems on a friend's computer, specs are as follows:

ASUS A8N Vista edition
2 gigs ram
AMD 6400+X2
2 8800GTX in sli

All of this is on a 700W PSU (yeah, I know...he needs more).

Now I installed his water cooler and pressed the power button, I heard a tick, and see the LED lights turn on, the fans begin to move, and then it just cuts. Same thing no matter how many times you press it. Mobo LED stays lit saying it's getting power.

What I wanna know is did the start up power draw kill the PSU? I can't get it to even come on now so I told him to go get a 1KW PSU and we'll see what we can do.

What PSU is it? A good 700W would be able to handle all that.

Yeah and good brand of PSU that is rated at 700 watts is fine... But if you got a generic one then thats your problem, off brands tend to lie about quality.

Try powering up with a single card. Also, you might want to check all the jumper positions and test the setup out of the case on an insulating surface.

reset CMOS. A bad motherboard could also cause this

psu has a built in kill switch.. if it sense's a over current after a preset time like 5-10ms the psu shuts off. this way it doesnt kill it self, now if you power it up to many times in a row it might die since the fets are overheating from the high current draw.

depending on the psu it may not be able to handle 8800gtx's in sli. cause they require more juice then 8800gts 640's or lower.

once you tell us what psu it is we can better help...

well after looking at it, the motherboard may be dead, tried a diff PSU and it still didn't boot, barely even tried to start the fans. PSU was a thermaltake toughpower 700W...looks like my friend is getting a new Mobo :(

Why not just reset the BIOS?

Leave it unpowered and without battery overnight, at least 8 hours.

I have revived boards like this, and so did "dom" the other day

It's not the PSU - both units are sensing a fault. Check over the system carefully for shorts... board may still be ok.

That's a good idea!

@OP

Run the board caseless - that way you wil know it is not the case.

Motherboard is definitely dead, tested it. Looks like one of the molex connectors shorted as he was running through a lot of branch type connectors. He got a new mobo (not asus this time) and PSU and is happy as ever.

Edit: He picked up a coolermaster cosmos case. Huge and NICE!

So he shorts connectors and fries the mobo, then gets a different brand "this time" ?

Maybe he should get a different computer assembler next time.

I do not take well to people bringing down the one brand I have never had problems with.

If he needs to use all those branch splitter cables he needs a new PSU, period.

The person that made his computer was a local computer store that didn't do a very good job. They TRIED to make it look nice but it didn't matter. His 8800GTX had to be slid in diagonally at first for it to even fit because of the non-removable hard drive cage.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't say it was a bad brand at all (the board or the psu, or the case even) just the case and PSU had poor layouts and THAT was the problem.

if the company that built the computer didnt take the motherboard layout into consideration. then thats their fualt, not the motheboard manfacture.

maybe im just lucky i dont have to worry about such things with my case, but then not many spend $250 on a computer case.

I never said that it was the motherboard's fault for the layout, I just said that he didn't get Asus this time. He ended up with Abit which is fine, but I do see where it may have been misread to where I was bashing asus.

but here you cleary say it is, maybe not in so many words...

what i was saying if there was a issue with the layout of the board in said case. the company that built that computer for your friend should have pointed this out to him. imo this is a major thing to have happen. if i was doing repair work for someone. i always tell them if there are any issues with what they choose or choosing. i know its just a do what the cust wants but if there is a problem its a problem....

sorry I wrote that while in class and I wasn't watching the screen, guess I should have been more specific. I'll edit it now though.

Never accused you of flaming me so you don't have to get all defensive so quick, lol.

Lol.

Anyways ended up getting him all hooked up and ready to go. Not sure if the 12CM radiator is sufficient for him but we'll see. Thanks for the help guys!
