View Full Version : Pci-E 2.0 on Pci-E 1.1 for power 75w vs 150w

I know that electricly 2.0 will provide 75w more than 1.1 and that the bandwidth will not be a factor for a single card solution. My question is for the longevity sense.

As it stands the current Flagship cards are getting a max of 225w via 75w Slot + 2 PCI-E power connectors at 75w x 2. Is there any word on if the newer flagship Nvidia/ATI cards will be backwards compatible and if so then how will they maintain their power requirement on 1.1 if 2.0 offers 150w at the slot? Are they going to offer a third PCI-E power connection on the card?

I see some boards that offer an extra molex power connection under the PCI-E slot but, not all P35 or 680i boards offer this.

Rumor has it that PCI-E 2.0 cards will initially still come with additional PCIE / molex connectors on the card to facilitate backwards compatibility. Electrically speaking, the PCI-E sockets are compatible (in terms of pin layout and config), so a PCI-E 2.0 will fit and work in a PCI-E 1.x slot.

I have to assume that a new PCI-E 2.0 video card that needs the extra power will throw a warning when you try to boot your PC without the extra power connected while on a PCI-E 1.x socket. Just like what happens now if you forget to plug in your additional molexes into a current AGP / PCI-E video card today.

Do mentions of PCI-E 1.1 and 1.0 refer to the same socket type, or are they different?
