View Full Version : IBM 75GXP 20 gig model. Worrying clicking noise.
Good morning,
I arrived to work this morning and find that my machine has failed to do a defrag.
It asked for a scan disk in thorough mode. So, I started that process to correct any errors that might be found.
What happens next isn't too good. I get a lot of cluster errors and unable to read files on the drive. The drive makes this sort of looping seeking noise with a high pitched sort of popping eackkkking noise.
The drive seems choppy and slow to access data.
I can't complete a scandisk or a defrag.
Is my drive wasted? I know IBM has a lot of problems with the 75GXP model.
Help!
Sounds like its bad :(
I still have my 75gxp, things been running 24/7 for two years now.
sounds like a head crash. backup all the data you can then run IBMs disk tools on the drive to test it. it will give you a code and you can rma it if it is still under warranty. You can get the disk tools here (http://www.storage.ibm.com/hdd/support/download.htm)
run the drive fitness test. Hope this helps.

that lil klack noise is never good.
recover your data asap. it's about to go tits up.
if for some reason you can't recover all your data, stick the drive in a zip lock bag and throw it in the freezer for 20 mins or more. you may get a good 10 mins out of it to recover the rest of what you lost.
could firmware help that? I got access to firmware updates for the 75GXP HD from IBM
Thanks for the replies.
I am transfering my important data to another drive. I hope it reads all the data.
kendan:
I ran the ibm drive fitness test and failed. It asks if i want to write zeros to the drive to "fix" the problem.
reports and error code back to me. I didn't write it down because i wanted to safe whatever uptime i have left to get the data off the drive.
Shadow:
Grin, the old freezer trick eh? I read about that once but never tried it.
I wonder how long the drive will run before it totally dies.

yea, i think that sound is called the click of death. remember it happend to my old 2 gig drive.
write down the error code then check IBM's site and see if you can search for it. I am not sure of how to get the rma with IBM but I would email their tech support and include the error code and see what they say. After you save all your data and write down the error code then you can try to write ones and zeros and then run drive fitness again and see if the error code is the same or even there. Hope this helps.
don't even bother trying to fix it if it's under warranty. i've had two 75gxps that did that exact same thing and both died completely shortly after. back up your data and send the drive back.
Arrived at work today and now my other 45 gig gxp75 is toast.
It was in another machine. I tried to fire it up to install the smart defender program on it and it just makes nasty scraching noises. Far worse than the 20 giger which is still running...just about.
the 45 giger won't boot. just gives a good old "drive failure"
Gotta love these drives.
i have the 20 gig 75 gxp drive and its been working fine for about a year now.

there's a law suit going on about that drive....options are basically keep the drive and get a refund at the end of the suit (which could be a year or more) or RMA it and hope for a better one.
Info on the suit can be found here (http://www.sheller.com/ibmclassaction.htm)
Kicking the bad luck all over the year.
Clicking is always the start to the "HDD passes away"
Never a good thing to listen to and usually when it happens you defintely know start backing up and the drive is about to blow.
Thanks for the link Shadow!
They will rma the 45 gig. not a problem.
but ibm won't touch the 20 gig. They said it works fine and was corrupted by windows write caching?
Guy told me to use the drive fitness test to write zeros to the drive. I err disagree with him regarding the nature of the problem. Never the less the drive is working much better after this zero writing. I imagine the drive will die again once i reach those bad sectors when the drive fills up. IBM was awful when i called support.
Anyway, we see what happens next. 65 gigs in 5 days.

maybe i've missed something...... but let me get this strait.... YOU PUT IT IN THE FREEZER, hmmm, what does this do! i'm at a loss for words.
I think and this might be wrong...that the idea is, heat causes the drive platers to expand slightly causing the read of the data to be near impossible. Cooling the drive brings everything closer together for a short period of time so you can read the drive until it heats up and expands.
there is my guess.
IBM asked me to do a low level format (write zeros) to the dying 20 gig drive.
Did that last night before I left work.
Reinstalled windows and all the apps.
This morning the drive does the same thing.
Horrible scratching noise.
I KNEW this was going to happen.
Looks like i'll be calling tech support AGAIN today.
Drive ran pretty good for about 2 hours.
What a waste of time.

with the clicking noise of death, it can't be far off, i heard that you can send your hdd back to ibm if it was under 18 months old or something like that, and they would try to fix it free
