Dead Floppy

Floppy used to work fine...until i borrowed a friend's digital camera to take pictures. Used his smartmedia-to-floppy adapter to transfer images onto my computer. Upon attempting to transfer the pics via the floppy, the system crashes. Since the crash, the floppy does not work. It'll light up when I insert a disk in, but a windows error msg saying that the "drive is not ready: try again or cancel"
I tried switching to a new floppy drive and same problem. It shares a same IDE cable w/ my second HD (which works)
The compact flashcard floppy adapter that i used is usually used with a Mac (can that be a problem?)
I use Win98.
