How can I tell if the firewall is off in win XP? I can not be pinged by friends is it xp or my ISP ATT/wesuck.
Ok if you go to start, control panel, look for network connections,
dbl click network and you should see your connection right click it
go to properties and select advanced, you should see a check box
enable(check) disable(uncheck)
Hope this helps
(this is in xp pro,I'm not to sure if its any diff than home edition)

What message do you get when you try to ping yourself?
You need port 80 open. And I think 4144 <--not sure about that one though...

I read somewhere ( i think its here) that someone running a LAN in winXP couldnt connect to the other computers and vice versa, maybe the same thing like this is happening. Have you tried connecting to other servers?
Also, if you're running Win XP home, you can't form any kind of network unless your friend is also running XP.
Not 100% about how that applies to a game server, though.

Im the friend -- When he was running 98se as I am there was no prob connecting to each other. That was before the @home to attbs switch.During the downtime he changed over to xp.We are on the same node but can not ping each other but I can ping someone on the next street tho Im not sure he is on same node.Might this be something attbs is doing or is this an xp pro issue? btw his xp firewall is off and went as far as removing zap 2.6 but......

Just a guess here, but make sure you have the right ip's of each other. I noticed you (chief) said you were in the @home switch mess...so was I and for some reason my ip addy had changed.
LOL Yes the Ip's are correct,I really do think its something in his xp settings that we can not find. He's going to dualboot 98se so we'll see but would like to figure this out.
