Fixing my Compaq NC 6000... need help with HD descripency

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well here is the specs page for my Compaq nc 6000:

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/q...Specifications

The HD interface says
"Height 0.74 in (9.5 mm)
Width 2.75 in (70 mm)
Interface ATA-5
Transfer Rate Synchronous (maximum) 100 MB/s (Drive Capability)
Security ATA Security
Seek Time
(typical reads, including settling) Single Track 3 ms
Average 13 ms
Maximum 24 ms
Rotational Speed 5400 rpm
Logical Blocks 78,140,160
Operating Temperature 41° to 131° F (5° to 55° C)
Features Security ATA Security
"

I can't find "ATA-5" at Newegg.com, which leads me to suspect that ATA-6 or ATA150 would work as well.

If ATA-6 or ATA150 work with my Compaq nc 6000, could you suggest to me out of the posted links - or a better deal if you have one to submit - which is the best deal? I'm not looking for a huge hard drive capacity, as I have a 250 gigabyte HD. It just needs to run a Linux version until I can afford windows(that's saying if I'll even go back from Linux).

ATA 5 is ATA-66. You should be able to put in any ATA100 2.5" drive.
What is your budget, since you don't care for capacity?

Anything under 100$ I figured would do. I'm just looking for a reliable hard drive.

i think the only one that will work is the #4 link, the others are serial ata which i dont think will work with that setup. but please dont take my word for it, i am not a laptop expert

lets wait for some other input on this matter

There should be WD Scorpio 160GB for that price. In Canada, they are around $100.

I've been hunting for this drive locally but never did find it

I ended up buying a Lacie 160GB for $109 CAN, it came with a Seagate 5400.3 which costs more than that without an enclosure.

That's a bit on the higher side of my price limit. Note, I said capacity wasn't an issue, so even 40 gigs is fine. I'm trying to get the best performance with the least cost (I assume capacity has a factor in cost).

most drives in that size you are looking for are all comparable. You don't seem to have very high requirements so get whatever appeals to you.

These would be good choices for your specs:

Performance: Hitachi E7K100 60GB - Lower latency, better transfer rates

Basic functionality: Western Digital Scorpio WD400BEVE

Others in this size are comparable, as Know Nuttin said, the others are simply out of stock.

I would not recommend 4200RPM drives due to low performance.
