Can I use a Linksys Wireless G Access Point in ANY WAY to strengthen the signal reaching my desktop? The internet is being beamed (with permission) from my neighbor's house. While its not majorly slow, its still painful to be on a 54mbps network when I can only utilitize 18mpbs of the connection due to the relatively short distance between our houses.
I have a Linksys Wireless G Router in her office, a Wireless G Access Point thats disconnected atm, and an ethernet Switch. My computer connects to the web via a PCI Linksys Wifi G card. What can you do for me?
What type of Linksys router? The exact model would help. DD-WRT allows for a repeater mode which helps to extend the signal.

Note: DD-WRT only works on WRT54G/GS/GL models, up to v8. The v5-8 models need a special method of flashing the dd-wrt firmware or the router will brick.

Are you actually getting more than 18mbps (approx 2MB/s) from the ISP?
what is the sight line between your house and your neighbor...if she lets you, see if you could add an boost antenna to her wireless router...maybe an outdoor antenna that would spread the love and you would have a stonger connection...

No, I wasn't getting more than 18mpbs from my ISP, but it still seems that the poor reception was affecting my connection at times.
I found instructions to use the access point as a repeater on linksys's site. I set it up downstairs. Bandwidth wasn't affected.
