View Full Version : Should we Start the Slow Computer Race Again?

TC

Well since Chawken took his with him to Nova Star I was thinking maybe we should start this race over too. I've got the new "member" signed up if anyone wants to do this again. Just use the email address "ocsetiteam@charter.net" Now what should it be called - the federation or the collective?

TC

PS - for now I named the new member "Team_Race"

Spare CPU cycles never hurt...even if they are slow. As I post this I am running SETI on a P200MMX. Plus a complition is always fun...just make sure you get recruits first.

If any one else wants to go in, my dual 400 is down right now (I wrecked Linux!!!!) so I'll toss that in on a team.

I have an old 486 laptop I'd like to get crunching...but it has Win 3.1 on it

I guess I could pull the drive and install Linux....any ideas

I have to reinstall RedHat 7.2 on the duallie: ran well, but I screwed it up trying to get Samba running!

RH7.2 ran great on the thing.

Anybody in for taking TC on?

I'll set up a team, or someone else can and I'll join!

TC

Isn't Basher's slow team still around?

Basher
12-22-01, 12:23 AM
yep

12-22-01, 07:26 AM
Hey HEY!

You in for some more slow pc races?

We should try to get close to parity on the teams to start with, eh?

or not!

I just figure this will be my only chance to catch up to/ pass TC :D
so I'll be on the other team!

Sorry TC: its tough to be #1!:burn:

TC
12-22-01, 09:43 AM
Well seeing as how I have nothing slow enough to participate I won't be contributing units to it.

dugans
12-22-01, 11:01 AM
Ok, I guess thats one dream I'll have to give up!!:D

I'll be reinstalling the os on my duallie sometime today, in between doing holiday stuff- I'll check in here before starting Seti up and if no one else has started a new antique pc team, I will!

No responses yet, so I set up "slowteamoc@yahoo.com" for an email account.

The dual 400 is running with Redhat 7.2 and crunching 2 wus right now.

Any body joining?
Is your slow team the Target, Basher? If it is, I'll need some HELP! 48 wu worth !!!!!

I resurrected The Collective btw.:D

TC
12-22-01, 10:55 PM
Okay I can let my ancient P2 450 crunch for my slow team. If I had an extra case handy I could get the old ppro 200 going too.

Anyway my team's name is "TC'sTurtleTeam" and to crunch for me (duh who else would you crunch for) just use "ocsetiteam@charter.net" :)

dugans
12-22-01, 11:06 PM
:D Sweet!

Basher's team is still going- the Federation, with 48 wu
Dugans' team just started- the Collective, with 0:(
And TC's team has started-TC'sTurtleTeam, with 0 ?

And they're off!

LOL Once I get some of the antiquated hardware back I can take a peek and see what I have to contribute, anyone know a way to make Seti work just off a floppy with no os ? Someway to get it to send through a nic card ? Just wondering if that is possible, anyone had any luck with this or no ?

I've been trying to get 1 of my 486s up for a while and I think I'm *finally* about to get it going. Trying a format this time. Damned old machines... I forgot how much... erm... fun... they were. :D

Well, SETIGate (my caching program) can transmit and recieve WUs over a network. Basicly, you set up SETI on each computer to use a proxy server and then SETIGate acts as the proxy. Sounds like it would work great. Only one machine needed to download WUs, and all the machines feeding off of that one system. (Too bad I don't enough about networking to know "what" I'm spouting, but trust me, my spouting is correct. :D )

Also, try finding linux-on-a-floppy (not on a stick :D), and see if any of them leave enough room for the 541k needed for SETI. (just checked the size of SETI and all it's related files... might get bigger as the result file grows...). I had one that would load linux into a ramdrive so that you wouldn't have to deal with the slow floppy drive after boot. See if you can find any like that. I don't even WANT to know how much slower SETI runs on a floppy.

Okay, this race is screamin' now!

Federation- still holding steady in the lead with 48 (I think we've got him on the run though!)

Tc'sTurtleTeam- 3

New Collective- 2 .................Must fully Assimilate Linux.......Tweak!

<edit>
The New Collective has assimilated all unnecessary services.

Will now proceed to assimilate all wu, one at a time.

Xmas Evening Update:

The Federation- 48 and holding steady in the lead
The New Collective- 6 and trying to assimilate more antique cpus
TCsTurtleTeam- 5 But Do NOT count them out!

A note: Linux is working great on the older stuff, and if you know command-line can install on very little space

that 386 looks good

12-26-01, 02:06 AM
4 socketed cache chips plus a tag chip for 128kb l2 cache. I think I have a 486 with chips that can double that to 256kb
I ought to fill the Math coprocessor socket too, for SETI. AMD 40Mz coprocessor is going to be tough to find. Anyone here got one?

lennytiger
12-26-01, 03:32 AM
you know if i were still in england I had an old 386 running a proxy server for my dsl, and I'm sure that had an AMD math coprocessor, i don't need it all that box did was supply net access to everyone over a linux floppy!!

Cyrix 387DX-33 might O/C but the shipping is an outrageous $8.80 here:

Classifieds here are more reasonable:

Stats update:

Federation- 48 Is anybody there?

New Collective- 16 The borg machine is looking through trash heaps for old hardware to rebuild!

TC'sTurtleTeam- 13 But they've pulled out a secret weapon! 600 massive mhz of P3 to counter the New Collective's charge!

Lancelot

I could add a genuine i486DX2-66 as a 24/7 Seti box.
-edit- Lol, yeah I just went through my attick and found two old Compaq 486DX2 boxes, 20Megs of SIMM, a Vesa local bus mainboard and vidcard, a working 240MB IDE HDD, an old 14" monitor and I decided to build the team a Win95 Rig just for fun and old times sake!

The New Collective- 22 failed in an attempt to resurrect an old MAC
TC'sTurtleTeam-20 Seem to be creeping back up!

Has anybody started another team? People joining up?

*note: I almost bought a $39 deal today: 233mhz cpu/mobo combo. Decided against it- it was a CYRIX!

I like the idea.......but I can't: I've got linux on the two pcs that are going, and I haven't got any clue how to set up caching! I can barely do linux as it is! :p

I still don't even have VNC on those things, ALTHOUGH: I just got the answer for that in another thread, so I may do that later.:D

I need to get off my butt and learn it better. Should be taking a night class in that after I finish ccna.
